Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matt Maffei. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Matt, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Epic Water Filters was founded by Ash Heather in 2015. Ash was living in Singapore at the time and was shocked with the amount of pollution on the beaches, specifically single use plastic pollution. Ash had his family and children spend their time on the beaches picking up this plastic pollution instead of enjoying the beaches. This is where he thought to himself, there must be a solution to this problem. After doing some research Ash learned that the main reasons people purchased single use plastic bottles was for two reasons. The first is convenience and the second is because people don’t trust the tap water. With these ideas in mind, Epic Water Filters was born. We believe by encouraging people to drink the water around them with a strong water filter we can eliminate the need for single use plastic bottles. By having access to clean, contaminant free water at home or on the go there is no longer a reason to purchase these harmful single use plastic products. Our mission is to minimize single use plastic pollution through water filtration.
Matt, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As previously mentioned, Epic Water Filters was started after a first hand look at the plastic pollution crisis in our oceans and on our beaches. The idea was to make a wide variety of water filtration products to encourage people to drink the water around them instead of buying harmful single use plastic bottles. We make a wide variety of water filtration products from under the sink filters, pitcher and dispensers, to on the go filtered water bottles. With our range of products we have any and all situations covered for access to clean water. Our under the sink unit and pitcher/dispenser filters are affordable solution to having clean water at home. We have filters for people on well water or city water, so no matter where you live we have something that works for your water type. In addition to our home filtration units we have engineered our very own water bottle filter. We call this the “Everywhere filter” and as the name suggests, you can drink water from ANY freshwater source. If you are hiking or camping in the backcountry you can fill up from a lake, river, or puddle and enjoy clean water. If you are traveling to Mexico or another country with questionable tap water our bottle filter will make that tap water safe to drink as well.
Our filters separate us from the competition for a few reasons. The first being the quality. Our filters have been rigorously tested and engineered right here in the USA to remove over 200+ harmful water contaminants. Our filters remove heavy metals, chlorine, fluoride, PFAS, pharmaceuticals, VOC’s, microplastics, and so much more. We use an activated solid carbon block filter construction in most of our filters as it is the most effective way to remove contaminants all while leaving healthy trace minerals in the water. We can ramble on and on about the science of our filters and why they are better than the competition but we will spare you those details. In a nutshell, we pride ourselves for making quality, affordable, American made, and trustworthy products that save plastic water bottles and remove the most contaminants possible from any water source.
We are most proud of our mission, team, customers, and partnerships. We are a small mission driven business of under 10 people who are genuinely looking to make a positive impact on peoples health and the environment. We have organized local river and beach cleanups through our internal and external network of influencers and community members to make a positive impact on our environment. We have hosted/sponsored cleanups all over the world including right here in Boulder to Florida, Panama, San Diego and more! Lastly, we have a plethora of partnerships with local artists and non-profits around the world. These partnerships are mainly highlighted and supported on our “Artist Series” water bottles. For anytime we sell one of these bottles we donate a portion of that sale to the artist and to the nonprofit associated with that bottle. It’s a great way for customers to brighten their boring water bottles with unique artwork all while supporting a good cause.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
As a small business we leverage social media and email marketing to keep our customers “in the loop” in the world of water filtration. We also leverage post purchase surveys to hear customers feedback for new products, contaminants they are concerned with removing, and why they purchased from us. We also use a wide variety of affiliates, athletes, and influencers to showcase and discuss our products out in “the real world.” Its a combination of all these things that keeps Epic Water Filters in the eyes of our consumers and allows them to engage and provide valuable feedback that we can use to grow, make changes, and improve the business.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
First and foremost, choose a business or avenue that people are organically interested in or searching for. If you find a business that requires little marketing and explaining this will help with growth significantly. For us, water filtration is already in the eyes of consumers around the world which has organically helped our account grow. People are searching for new and improved ways to filter their water and improve their health. As a brand using social media we focus on having fun and engaging content that still highlights our products and why they are better/different than our competition. Our main advice for growing social media starts with having a good product, message, or business that people are already interested in. Then use a network of influencers, athletes, affiliates, friends and family to make content with your products as organically as possible. We found that content that seems like an ad does not help with engagement or growth. Content that is fun, organic, informative, etc is the best way to promote social media growth.
