We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matt Homes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matt below.
Matt, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
As a storyteller, most definitely my first book. It was born out of deep depression. A cascade of decisions gave way to a complete book that went on to have two more parts. Here We Remain a zombie apocalypse story, was parts of a script a few friends were writing and they went off to do their own thing. In a rage I deleted the folder that had all my writing in it. Years later, no job, no self love, and no hope i turned to my writing. Only to find I deleted it and I could have let that stop me but instead I decided to use what I could remember but tell the story from a different perspective. That one decision lead to a beautiful story of a family finding peace and reconnecting, all while an apocalypse just started.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a storyteller, and always have been. I’m not classically trained beyond creative writing classes in high school. I didn’t let that stop me however. I pieced together the knowledge and learned on the fly to get my writing to become something. I’ve since transitioned to blogs and podcasting. As the host of The Homes Room Podcast I bring real world experience to a safe place, allowing listeners to learn about life they may not otherwise know exists. Our guests leave feeling convicted in their own path and our listeners exit with inspiration and understanding.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is and always has been the same. To create something I feel proud of. Something I walk away from knowing I did my best and learned something new. If someone else walks away from my work with a connection to a character that’s a cherry on top. As for podcasting my mission is to inspire others and make everyone I can feel proud of themselves and inspired to go out into the world and be unapologetically THEMSELVES.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think the biggest thing a non-creative can struggle to understand about the creative journey isn’t about creativity at all. I think the hardest thing would be that creativity isn’t necessarily a skill. Meaning it’s actually a part of us as creative, we have to do it to feel whole, like ourselves. We can improve like with a skill, we can learn new ways to be creative, but if we stop creating something… we stop being us and in that way for too long it can feel like grief. It’s hard to explain in my opinion.
