Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matt Hawley. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Matt, thanks for joining us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
My biggest issue has been myself. 8 years after starting Hawley Inspections I was at a business conference when I signed up for a coaching program. 8 months later as I prepared to go to that coaching program’s big yearly conference I got out of the original CDs and started listening to them for the 3 rd time. Even though this was my 3rd time listening to these CDs it was my first time hearing the question that would change my life forever. Mike Crow asked the simple question of what is keeping you from being the best you can be at that exact moment I had just reached over and opened my second beer on the drive home and look at the empty can on my floorboard and realized exactly what had kept me from being the best that I could be. The rest of that drive home I had to ask myself some tough questions and when I got home I had a talk with my wife the very next day February 14th I started my new journey through life being sober. In the months that followed I meet multiple people that would have large impacts on my life, I got a speaking coach and got professionally trained in speaking. I was asked to be in a compilation book and to tell my story that book went on to be a best-selling book. My business doubled in size. I was asked to speak at a conference in Las Vegas at the Bellagio and to tell my story there. I take every chance I can to tell my story of why I started drinking in Junior High how I was a alcoholic by the time I graduated High School the years and battles with depression failed suicide attempt and everything that went with it with the simple hope that when I ask the question to the next person of what is keeping you from being the best that you can be that just one person can find the answer and improve there life.
Matt, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I always say I got into my industry when I was 5 years old. My parents bought a lumberyard when I was 5 years old by the time I was 8 years old I could drive a forklift I grew up in the construction industry and was in and out of it my whole life and then one day my wife told me that I needed to start a home inspection business. We provide more than just home inspections we provide peace of mind for our clients. We supply our clients with the opportunity to get all the inspections they will need in addition to just the home, termite, sewer, septic, radon, lead, asbestos, air quality/mold, and much more. We were the first inspection company in our area to do free repair follow-ups, we are the only ones that do a 120-day guarantee on our termite inspections, a 100-day guarantee on all major appliances, 1 year on sewer lateral inspections, and free thermal imaging with the inspection. We give discounts to all of our veterans and first responders
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
Marketing was hard for me in the beginning because I thought that I was a home inspector then one day I realized that the truth was I owned a marketing company that happened to do home inspections on the side. Once I realized the truth I put a plan together and started going out and introducing myself to the real estate agents. This was hard because I lacked self-confidence and then made the mistake of talking about myself a lot eventually I learned to turn that around when I meet an agent to ask about them and how I could help them then eventually they started trusting me and giving me work in return.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
It’s not all about how wonderful my company is and what it does differently than everyone else. It’s all about how can I make your life easier how can I make you more successful how can I help you solve your problems? Once I figured that out as a person I was much happier and found that the more I helped other people the more they wanted to help me.
