Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matt Borlenghi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Matt, appreciate you joining us today. Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
TAKE A BREATH BEFORE RESPONDING! Years ago, I had just quit All My Children to pursue sitcoms and the laughs to be had at work (rather than the drama and having to tell Kelly Ripa I loved her 25 times a day, lol).
I was asked to meet with the heads of talent and casting at FOX.
90 seconds into the meeting they said “So, do you want to be the new guy on Beverly Hills 90210 or Melrose Place?”.
Being the impetuous young dumbass that I was, I said “Eh… I just left a soap.. Not really into more drama right now. I want to do sitcoms and laugh all day”.
Had I taken a breath, and had my agent with me at the meeting, I’d have asked if this was a formal offer and discussed it further.
To their credit, they created a couple of series regular roles for me on a pilot called ‘Enemies’ and a series called ‘Party Girl’.
It turns out, it WAS a formal offer and I could have ruled on BH 90210 or Melrose Place.
However, if that had happened, I wouldn’t have the family I have today. My wife. My kids… I’m good with it.
Currently, I’m the #pawnshopguy Lyle on Cobra Kai, and season 5 just dropped on Netflix 9/9/22.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I felt at 7 years old that I was going to be an actor. Nothing was going to get in my way. Except for my own head.
That happened a few times, when I made poor lifestyle choices or poor decisions, but I’m still here and I am grateful.
My favorite role to date, by far, is my current role on Cobra Kai.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish the internet had been around when I was younger, with regular roles on all my soaps and sitcoms. Social media, etc. These days just about anyone can make a million dollars without having any tangible talent or expertise #smh
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Why So Serious? When I was the new young guy on All My Children, I spent way too much time diving into the drama written, making myself miserable, being a Method Actor, torturing myself in ways. Depriving myself of sleep to make sure I was the most prepared person on set.
I learned, over time, to just do the job. Just Be. Turn it on and off like a light switch.
Just Act…
