We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matt Blasing. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matt below.
Matt, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a customer success story with us?
In 2018, I photographed a wedding for a couple who started their day in a very tumultuous way. Their wedding planner, who was relatively new to the industry, failed to appear at their rehearsal dinner. No call-no show. The planner was working on material for self-promotion, which the couple later found out, and felt the planner prioritized their own image rather than a cornerstone event in the couple’s life. The couple fired the planner as soon as the rehearsal dinner ended.
This is where my wife Amy and I stepped in.
While I started the day early to prep the photo booth on my own while printing out photography timelines and shot lists and charging batteries, my wife went to the bakery where the couple’s cake was being held (it was the planner’s job to pick up the cake and deliver it to the venue). My wife delivered the cake, swung home and got ready, and we headed to the venue with great haste. We arrived early to set up the reception area, apply chair covers and decorative bows, and arrange ceenterpieces, also the planner’s job. Their florist, who is a very good friend of ours, also stepped in to help.
Long story short: by the local wedding industry stepping up in conjunction with the venue and doing the work that was needed, this couple had a huge burden taken off their mind and their day was executed flawlessly.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As of 2024, I’ve been photographing weddings for ten years. I utilize a blend of natural and artificial light to seamlessly integrate the subjects with their environment and really make their images pop with dramatic use of light and shadow. While I consider myself more of a technician than an artist, the one thing that has set me apart from my competitors has been the level of service I provide. Since my wife and I also planned most of our own wedding, we realize the amount of effort and stress it takes to make one’s day perfect. I’ve spent the last decade cultivating relationships with other vendors such as DJ’s, venues, and florists, to name a few, and have taken the time to understand how these vendors work before recommending them to couples to make their day perfect.
Being able to answer every question a client may have speaks to the amount of experience I’ve developed through trial and error, mistakes and successes. Couples have complimented me on the unexpectedly quick turnaround of their wedding photos, and family members have complimented my level of service and skill, especially with how quick and organized the family photos are (nobody likes standing around for too long on a hot day to take formals). In short, I think my work and service speak for themselves, and being of service to a couple and their family brings me joy (and I often get new friends from the experience).

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Happiness and client satisfaction are my goals. I’m well aware that my job is an integral part of a couple’s wedding day, since the wedding clothes are likely never worn again, the cake will be eaten, the bouquets will wilt, and the wedding gift money will be spent. The photos are what remains, and there’s only one shot to get them right in a classy and timeless way.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I try to get along with everyone, both clients and fellow professionals. That sounds simple and almost a little too basic, but I believe that cultivating relationships with other vendors only yields positive results. Rather than seeing other photographers as competition, I’d rather be a team. After all, if a couple asks me if I’m available on their popular fall date and I’m not, I’d like to still be of service by referring them to another photographer I trust, is friendly, and provides stellar work and service.
