We were lucky to catch up with Matt Barri recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Matt thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project to date is my debut EP called The Only Way Out Is Up dropping October 6th! It’s the first project where I feel like I’ve found the basis of the “Matt Barri” sound. It’s also the first project that I wrote, produced, and sang all by myself. I’m really proud of the work, but I also can’t wait for my next 2 EPs that follows. Those projects. I just as meaningful and I can’t wait for people to hear them.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My Name is Matt Barri and I’ve been making music for the last 10 years since the age of 12. The music that I have been producing and releasing I would call “electro pop” because it’s pop music at it’s core with EDM elements and production. Over the past two years, I really feel that I have solidified the “MATT BARRI” sound and I’m super proud of the direction it’s going in. The music I make is a culmination of all my influences from EDM and rock to even 80’s New Wave. A lot of people compare my music to the likeness of Porter Robinson and Madeon. If people find the end result is comparable to 2 of the greatest artists that ever lived I dont think that’s a bad problem to have.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal and mission is to keep creating. I want to connect with people the way my inspirations connected with me. I want to be a positive force in music and art. I never want to stop growing and learning as an artist, and my biggest goal would be to pave the way for the next generation of electronic music.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The biggest problem that artist face is the commodification of their art. Corporations are riding the backs of artists and making way to much money. No artist can survive by making music alone, you cant make a living off streaming and there aren’t a lot of ways to directly monetize your music. The real way to make a living in music is by touring, which in itself is incredibly expensive and when consumers by tickets they are blasted with exorbitant fees that don’t even go to the artist they are trying to support.
The best way to support artists and creatives is by reinvesting in local communities. Supporting local music scenes, and underground artists is the best way to support the art you love and that these artists live for.
