Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mathius M Gertz. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mathius M, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career.
Two of the most important skills that people need is mastery of non-defensive social communication and financial literacy.
Unfortunately we do not teach either of these in public or charter primary or secondary
schools. These two skills, communication and money management, are in my opinion
the determining factor for a successful for most people.
I acquired these skills late in life and the transformation for me has ben dramatic.
The ability to interact effectively and make friends combined with an understanding of how to
create wealth is transforming and empowering. If children
were as literate in these areas as they are about how to navigate the internet, it would positively
transform our society for the better.
When I was a history teacher, one of my favorite things was to explain the rise of nations in terms of gangs and commerce. When urban kids realize the connection with gangs and politics and economics, how they can see the world in terms of what they see in their neighborhoods, a new level of understanding takes hold and they begin to internalize being in control of their lives and their happiness and not a victim of a system that doesn’t care about them. Kind of what Fred Hampton tried to do with the Black Panthers, the Young Patriots and the Young Lords. What the rapper Nipsey Hussle was practicing before he was killed.
.
Mathius M, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always been fascinated by intangible products, educating, and the concept of little bits on money growing into fortunes. Intangible products include insurance, currency exchange, stocks, bonds and financing. They don’t really exist, like a coffee cup, but are ideas thar came about due to necessity. In an effort to understand these products, I developed patience and the ability to translate complex ideas into digestible facts. The way i do this is with storytelling and analogies. Professionally, I solve financial problems for people by explaining to them how to create liquidity from illiquid assets, such as real estate. These are basic financial concepts that most people never formally learn. Empowered with this kn0wledge in digestible form, they can now make intelligent and informed decisions about their life and their happiness.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I always wanted to collaborate, educate and problem solve. I just didn’t understand it in those terms. After years of being in projects that involved directly soliciting the public, I pivoted and learned how to network and create relationships with trusted advisors.
People like to work with people they like and trust who take a fiduciary position with them and their clients. In other words, to put their needs above my profits. I learned to become a joiner and find groups of professionals that I felt comfortable with and then make them comfortable with me by being transparent, vulnerable and open. The result is that they consider me to be an allied professional helping them to solve their clients problems and allowing me to educate them on my products and services.
The purpose of a business should be to help someone solve a problem. The objective of a business is to make a profit. You achieve your objective by honestly and sincerely fulfilling your purpose.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
“To know thyself is the ultimate form of aggression.” — Marion J. Levy Jr. Some men see things as they are, and say why. I dream of things that never were, and say why not. Robert Kennedy.
These are my favorite quotes. First you have to take the time to know who you are. Get a therapist. Once you really understand your strengths and weaknesses, you can design a strategy to live and work by. Once you do, you need to open your mind to the possibilities and not limit yourself unnecessarily. Limits are insidious. We are bombarded by them. Even in song. For most people, doing what you are best at is better than doing just what you want to do. Or find a way to combine the two.
I don’t believe that anyone makes it alone. So you need a strategy to surround yourself with people that not only have skills you need but whom you truly like, trust and respect. This takes work and effort and a decision to be part of the solution, not just someone exploiting systems.
Nothing has worked better for me than formal networking. I am an ambivert. That means I have traits of both an introvert and an extrovert. Networking sincerely has brought me joy, fortune and friends. But it is counterintuitive. As someone said, it’s not about hunting for prospects, it’s about farming for friendships. Know, like, trust and refer. That combined with knowledge and goal setting is the way for most people to go who want to learn to build and work on their business.
Lastly,
1.You have to develop a sense of humor. Don’t be afraid to be self deprecating. The best way to be liked is to learn to tell a joke. It’s not a natural skill for most people. So take some classes to learn how to be funny.
2. Learn to volunteer and give of your time and expertise. Don’t wait till you are older and more established and “have the time” Do it all through your life and you will be fuller and richer and happier. And you will make the world a better place.
