We recently connected with Mathieu Jean-Pierre and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mathieu, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Galore Urban Tech was such a weird name in the beginning. The acronym didn’t roll off the tongue too easy. (Try saying GUT and not laugh!) I spent countless hours going through several iterations and soliciting feedback from a few peers and my wife and the final result turned out great. It’s like I built the name backwards because of the ranking of my passions.
I love TECH and was bringing tech education to my community.
My community and those I wanted to serve we’re in URBAN neighborhoods that were historically and systemically disadvantaged.
I wanted to create something grand, beautiful and amazing and I wanted a word not used “that” much- GALORE
Today, Galore Urban Tech’s name rings some bells and the acronym just flows off the tongue of a lot people!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Matpreneur and I started a nonprofit focused on providing information and programs around tech. After volunteering in my local library for over one year, I realized we needed more. So I launched Galore to provide opportunities for youth to do more than just play games. I wanted them to be coders, graphic designers, marketers and even e-sports stars.
Since 2018 we’ve been able to host over 100 programs in NYC serving communities that are black, immigrant, low-income, historically disadvantaged and face barriers to possible entry into the tech industry. We’ve been lucky to have hosted programs in coding, drones, virtual reality, podcasting, photography and more. Plus we have hosted interns from high school and college. It’s more than games!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Delivering what you promise is always key. I don’t overpromise or try to out do myself too much. People see me and think tech and kids. They trust us to deliver a safe, loving and highly educational environment for the youths we serve. I’ve also been consistent, with our team, in bringing programs to life. quarter after quarter, year after year, we don’t stop programming.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Networking, networking, word of mouth! Meeting and engaging with new and old friends will give someone a wealth of information.
