We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mathias Fobi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mathias, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Growing up around Atlanta, Ga and being influenced by cultural family events as a teenager, I developed a passion for good quality sounds and bringing people together. I started creating music at about 15 years old, but took it a little more seriously after the release of my first EP, “Mind, Body & Soul” on SoundCloud.
Starting my career sooner or later would have been a different experience, but I believe that everything happens for a reason and the timing of when I began was just right. If I had started sooner, I may not have had the same level of life experience or maturity to draw from in my music. Starting later may have meant missing out on certain opportunities or not being as prepared for the industry.
Overall, I am happy with the timing of when I began my creative career and I wouldn’t change a thing. The experiences and challenges I have faced have helped shape me as an artist and I am excited to continue growing and evolving in my craft.
Mathias, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a HipHop/Afrobeat artist hailing from Duala, Cameroon and raised in Atlanta, Ga. Growing up, I was surrounded by music and cultural family events which helped to develop my passion for creating good quality sounds and bringing people together.
My music is a blend of HipHop and Afrobeat, which I believe sets me apart from others in the industry. I try to bring a unique sound that incorporates my African heritage and my American upbringing. I believe that my music has the ability to bring people together and I strive to create a positive and uplifting message in my lyrics.
I am most proud of the progress and growth I have made as an artist over the past few years. I have faced many challenges, but I am proud of the person and artist that I have become. I am excited to continue to grow and evolve in my craft and to share my music with the world.
For potential clients, followers and fans, I want them to know that I am dedicated to my craft and I strive to create authentic and meaningful music. I want my music to inspire and bring people together, and I am committed to always pushing myself to be the best that I can be.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I believe that NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) have the potential to be a game-changer for the music industry. They allow artists to monetize their work in new ways and give fans access to unique and one-of-a-kind experiences and collectibles.
NFTs allow artists to have more control over their work and the way it is distributed, and also opens up new opportunities for collaboration and engagement with fans. It also allows for a new way for fans to own and collect a piece of their favorite artist’s work in a way that is unique and can’t be replicated.
However, as with any new technology, there are still some challenges and unknowns that need to be addressed. I think it’s important for artists to be educated and informed about NFTs and how to use them to their advantage.
Overall, I am excited about the possibilities that NFTs present for the music industry and I am looking forward to exploring how to incorporate them into my own work as an artist.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I believe that non-creatives may struggle to understand the level of dedication and sacrifice that goes into building a career as a creative. Being an artist is not just a job, it’s a lifestyle and a passion. It requires a lot of hard work and perseverance, and often times it can be a difficult and uncertain journey.
Being a creative means that you are constantly putting yourself out there and putting your work on the line for others to critique and judge. It can be a very vulnerable and exposing experience, and it takes a lot of courage and self-belief to keep going. It’s not always easy to navigate the creative industry and to find success, but the rewards can be well worth it.
Another aspect that might be hard for non-creatives to understand is the level of dedication and self-discipline required to stay motivated and productive as a creative. Many times, the creative process can be slow and frustrating. It’s important to have a strong sense of discipline, to have a daily routine, and to be persistent in order to achieve your goals.
In summary, being a creative is not a easy journey, it’s a path full of obstacles, uncertainity and a lot of hard work. But it is also a path that can be incredibly fulfilling and rewarding if you are willing to put in the time and effort to make it happen.
