Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mathew Stubbs. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mathew, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
When I lived in Louisiana, I had decided to create my LLC and was thinking of a name for my business at the time. It was January of 2023, and I was thinking in my office chair at Target after clocking off from work. I was the Property Management Lead at the time. I thought about how God had called me out to go to Texas to open my own Handyman business. At the time, I had talked with who was going to be my business partner. He prayed and mentioned the idea of The Hands(like handyman) Services. I liked the name, because of The Hands and Feet of God. I filed for the name, and it was available. Since moving out to Texas, God has lead me in different directions to do His work for people. I have been able to meet so many amazing people! To be able to befriend other business owners, develop relationships with people, see so many beautiful areas of Texas, and at times realizing after completing jobs WHY I was lead there….. Lead to moments where I cried tears of joy, and thanked God for using me to help whomever I just finished helping. That is how I came up with the name of The Hands Services!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When it comes down to it, I have been in the construction industry for over 12 years now. When I was 15 years old, a hurricane ruined my dad’s house and we had to demo and rebuild it. My dad, brother, and I as well as family and friends helped to bring it back up within a few months. At a young age I learned how a house was built, and as years passed I ended up working as a Glazier Apprentice for Service Glass & Door Co, Handyman for Just Let Me Do It Commercial Services, Property Management Lead for Target, and Maintenance for Brookdale Senior Living. Between each of those jobs I had done Modeling for swimsuit, underwear, and athletic apparel. I had also been a personal trainer, fitness group instructor, and a Manager for Dairy Queen(as well as a cook/cashier for other fast food restaurants). When I was 27 I realized I’m Mechanically inclined, and I then began exploring my talents with different trades. As I completed each job, I looked back and realized how smooth it was for me to do a job I had never done before by simply looking at the problem and coming up with a solution.
One thing I noticed in the Construction Industry over years is that businesses/people were cutting corners to make money. Quality and Safety was being sacrificed more times than I can recall. I didn’t like knowing that people/businesses/schools were paying for sub par work. For me, I am an all or nothing kind of person. You either get my full efforts and energy in doing something…. Or you get nothing at all. There is no in between with me. So I decided make sure The Hands Services developed that reputation of great customer service, Safety, Quality, and Speed given with every job! To put my heart into every task I work on for customers. Proving to people that I simply want to help them get the desired outcome they were looking for.
I have done Residential properties for over 7 years, and worked on Commercial Properties for. Total of 5 years. As a handyman, I’m capable of doing basic electrical work, flooring, carpentry, siding, painting/staining, pressure washing, plumbing, as well as renovations and flip/turns. I offer free quoting for customers who reach out to me.
For me personally, I don’t like doing the same repetitive thing daily. It gets boring for me, and I start to lose interest. So when I have customers give me a list of different things, I knock them all out one by one with excitement! It keeps me on my toes, challenges my critical thinking skills, and allows me to take on different trades! That is personally why I enjoy being a handyman!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for building and growing my business has been THE POWER OF WORD OF MOUTH!! I started networking the moment I moved out here. I was told about BNI(Business Networking International), and decided to go visit a Chapter out in Austin, TX. I then walked into the Smart Set Chapter, and felt the energy, and typed of people I wanted to surround myself. They have been referring me left and right as they each learned who I was, what I stood for, and the quality of the work I provide.
Along with joining BNI, and taking the chair of my chapter as the Handyman, I have also had people refer me to other people who were looking for someone who could possibly do a job for who they were talking too. Word of mouth is a powerful thing!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe that God has helped me build my reputation in my industry. I have been blessed with the ability to look at something, and simply figure if out whether or not I’ve done it before. I keep God as the center of the business.
