We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mathew and Angela Hallden. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mathew and Angela below.
Mathew and Angela, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
The idea started as a dream and a tribute to family. There is a long history of baking and fond memories within our families. We met as dog lovers. Through Covid, as many did, we refined and tested our ideas on our own fur babies. We soon realized, as we gifted them to family and friends, that we needed to continue to improve them. We developed a unique process to make a crunchy outside and a soft inside texture. As we still say to this day, “Eyes up, tails up!” We constantly strive to push the envelope for flavor and texture, and always enjoy a good wagging tail from our clientele.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We make delicious gourmet dog treats that will always please your furry friend. Our treats are made as all natural as possible with no preservatives. Fresh food for us is standard, why not treat your fur baby the same?
We carry a variety of traditional dry treats as well as an interesting and rotating selection of fresh baked goods. Your dog will love them! We won’t tell if you take a nibble, they are just as safe and delicious for you!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Like many small businesses, we have had our ups and downs. Festival and events bring inclement weather. We have struggled at times making the best of lousy weather and slow business to keep our dream alive.
Our concept took some time for people to relate to. What we are doing is unusual. Who fresh bakes for their dogs? We do, and love doing so. Who else will love it? Your dog! Our concept is unusual, but no different than a fresh made meal for you.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
We have been blessed with a great team of web designers from a local university that took our business under it’s wing. They created a great website for us! We have a great handle on the cooking and baking aspect. We, in no way, have the tech backround to develop what we envisioned in an e-commerce platform. Www.madsdb.com has been live since late December 2023.
