We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mateo Hoyos a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mateo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back on your career, have you ever worked with a great leader or boss? We’d love to hear about the experience and what you think made them such a great leader.
I have had the opportunity to work with wonderful people. One stands out to me the most. While I can’t mention by name, this person truly gave me the tools to become a great professional. This person inspired my work by passing along information other great attorneys before them passed on to their professional life. Things like: “words have meanings,” and “what happens next?” left an impression on me that in the transactional legal world truly are most important. The endless reiteration of the work-product taught me how meticulous you should be when drafting, negotiating and handling real world transactions.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I come from a short history of truly inspiring entrepreneurs. My father who is 86 this year, was a farm administrator’s child (the nice way of saying person who took care of the farm for the farm owner – and who was able to live rent free with their family, as long as the farm was in good shape.)
My father turned out to be an amazing entrepreneur, the coffee bonanza helped but he did not rest with just agriculture businesses, he went on to own the textile plaza, glass plaza, and at some point women’s lingerie. He also put all of his family through school, including post graduates, while he remained at the “5th grade level.”
He was and still is a great entrepreneur but went I was called to help in the family businesses I noticed that he was just truly remarkable at having a vision and executing; the numbers and sometimes the laws (nothing crazy) didn’t align. Partnership were easy, and acting as a shareholder, officer and director, in his history played against him.
This inspired me to be a lawyer, one who actually knew of business but knew how to maneuver in the present world we live in.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
It might not look like it, but in the past (when I was still a minor) I had a few felony charges. These were very tolling times in my life and it took a lot of resilience to overcome those challenges and show, primarily the State of New York, professional ethics that I should be an attorney.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Speaking to people. At all costs, speaking to them at a conference, meeting, or online video with genuine curiosity.
