We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matene Okoye a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Matene, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Thanks for having me. I believe that it takes a positive mindset and unending grit to be successful in business. I also believe that being self-motivated and open to continuous growth is important in the journey of entrepreneurship. Also, It’s very important to have faith that things will eventually work out as it should.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Matene Okoye. Realtor, Business Owner, Wife, and Mom. I’ve worked as a Realtor and business owner for 17 years. I have a background in advertising, marketing, communications and sales. My plan was to open a fashion boutique however a very good friend told me she felt I would be good at selling real estate and I took her advise. I got my real estate license in 2014 and the rest is history. I love real estate because I play a part in people’s story and I love matching families with the right home for them. I also enjoy advising sellers on what they need to do to get the most out their investment. My husband and I own a family owned real estate brokerage, Sold 100 Real Estate Inc ,and we also offer renovated homes for resale. This year I secured a commercial space to expand my personal brand and offer a shared space for business owners and creators to rent out.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have had to pivot several times in my life.
I had to make the career shift from the fashion industry to real estate.
I have gone from a having an inasane unbalanced schedule to learning how to schedule what’s important and learning to leverage helpers.
This year I recognized the real estate market was changing and I needed to adjust. I knew I needed a more stable schedule so I’ve pivoted to more real estate investing, coaching and entering the world of digitial training.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Over the years I have always invested a portion of my earnings back into my business and have paid cash for investment properties.
To secure my commericial space I put 20% down and received financing from a private lender. I used personal savings forrenovations, furnishings, and office equipment.
