We were lucky to catch up with Mason Rain recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mason thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Knowing your worth. Not letting negative people try to control your talent. I think in my industry it is so easy to say, “I can’t do that” or believe someone telling you that you can’t do something. That’s what I love about our industry that it is LIMITLESS!! You can do so so many different things. Doing greater things is really really hard.
I went from making $13k in one year to $45k a year in just 365 days, because I did not listen to nay sayers that told me I didn’t have the experience. (And there was a lot of them)
I moved forward with what I believed I was capable of and knew my worth. Knowing your worth will either make you or break you here. Don’t let it break you.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Mason Rain, I am 24 years old and I am a business owner and hair artist in the San Antonio/Boerne area. I specialize in balayage & color services. I have been in the industry since 2017. I have such a deep love for connection!
One of the biggest things I focus on is being kind & showing love and gratitude with my clients. I know how important it is to get your hair done and want to feel your best. I always strive for happiness in my clients & that makes my heart completely full. It is the reason I do what I do everyday. I hope one day to be an inspiration to many or just one person who thought they couldn’t keep going. As long as I made a difference in the world I am happy.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One year ago I worked for a salon that only paid me $750 every two weeks at very most. I worked every single day to better my best & I was giving up. I wasn’t getting the energy I was giving out. I decided I was going to quit my job & start my own business, and work for myself. Whatever I had to do I was willing to do it.
I quit my job & immediately began falling in love with building my business. Painting the wall and adding personality to my place. I was completely scared I would fail, of course.
In just a matter of 6 months my world flipped upside down, and I was already doubling my income. I was slowly but surely realizing that jumping when I felt scared was exactly what was needed.
If I had not quit my job and started my own business I would not be able to travel to 5 states in one year, or take a solo road-trip to wherever I wanted!
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built it by posting, unapologetically. The best advise I ever got about social media was, “don’t worry if you don’t have likes, people are watching, keep posting.”
Soon enough I had a clientele to almost fill up my book on a consistent basis in 8 months.
Post everything, keep up with trends and reels and be authentic!
