We were lucky to catch up with Mason Greer recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mason, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Our company name came from an inside joke. My producing partner is Greek from the island of Cyprus. We used to joke about Dionysus (the God of wine and entertainment) being a thick boy. It came up in our initial launch of meeting when discussing names and wasn’t taken seriously. As we came up with more and more names however, Thicc Boy seemed to stick out amongst them all. Eventually we said “It kind of just sounds good.” We landed on the name and never looked back.
Mason, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Initially I wanted to be a novelist and English teacher. I published a book when I was 16 years old that became an option to read for minority literature in my highschool. During my senior year I was accidently thrown into a film production class and I took to it very hard. I switched majors and studied film immediately the following year.
After graduation I was hired to take on multiple documentaries gaining me the capital to move out to Los Angeles. During the early years I produced a slew of successful short films that gained distribution deals through Direct TV and Shorts TV as well as gaining me a few small gigs as a director and even more importantly a role as an assistant director on five different movies. The experience I gained in this position would give me the tools necessary to grow as a filmmaker and start my company Thicc Boy Productions. In the early years we took on commercials and product videos and even tackled an animated commercial for a new mobile app. In 2022 I met a fellow filmmaker who introduced me to the world of voice directing. I started directing English language dubbing for Netflix movies and TV shows and even had multiple projects break global top ten marks.
Currently I’m enjoying the festival circuit with a new film while working on a new animated project for a client and gearing up to direct a feature film early next year. My team and I are very happy with the story that we’ve created and are pleased to have a good amount of backers both financially and spiritually through our journey.
Our team is really looking forward to taking on new clientele in different mediums. We would love to work with fashion brands, new tech companies and any POC company owners who need a great visual piece of marketing.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
All the capitol used to jump start our business was used from money we made making art. My film “Through the Night” got multiple distribution deals including: Direct TV, Shorts TV, Meridian Release group and Filmocracy Streaming. A majority of the money made from these deals was used in the initial launch of the company. Additionally me and my business partner won a film competition in Cyprus and earned around $1200 in prize money that was dumped right into the company.
Have you ever had to pivot?
No surprise here but the pandemic was a huge pivot. I had four movies lined up that year that I was going to be acting in as well as 2 movies I was going to be assistant directing. 2020 was looking very good. After most of those project either bot put on hold or fell away all together, a lot of shifts happened for me including starting this company and seeking out other creative ventures like voice directing and teaching filmmaking to grades K-12
