We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mason Adams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mason , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Funny you should mention, “projects.” This whole thing has been a project, HA! Mason Adams Project formed as the full band late in 2017, this lineup was not solidified until early 2018. From the beginning, I was teaching myself to play guitar while simultaneously writing new material. That was a project all by itself. After finding the right guys for the job, it took us a while to fully capture the sound that we wanted to achieve. Finding our sound was a project. We have this gritty, folky, punky, grungy, rocky, dancey thing going on and are pretty unique in that sense. We learned so much early on when recording our first Ep, that we actually called it ‘Lessons.’ Each step of the way has presented us with a whole other challenge or project to manage. We are now releasing our debut full length album on 4/1/22, and I guess what makes this most meaningful is that it is the first one. It is especially meaningful to be releasing my first album at the age of 35, when this is something I never thought would happen or be possible.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have always had a love and passion for music. I began playing the drums at a young age and played bass guitar in a garage band in high school. In college, I focused my creative efforts on rapping and producing mixtapes. Life comes at you fast and I found myself becoming a father shortly after college graduation. In 2015, having some “extra” time on my hands, I picked up the guitar for the first time on March 1st, 2015 at the age of 28 years old. In just a couple short years, I had written several songs that I was performing mostly at open mics around Dallas. The full band was formed in early 2018 and the rest is history. The point is that it is never too late to start your journey. If you want something bad enough, you will make the time to focus your efforts towards achieving your goals.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When the worldwide pandemic crushed the live entertainment industry in 2020, we were forced to pivot from rehearsing to be “show ready” to rehearsing to be “studio ready.” We utilized our down time to record a lot of music and switched from in-person shows to live streams. Adaptability is the important thing to remember here, no matter what industry you are in.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
From a management and entrepreneurial perspective, The Leadership Experience by Richard Daft is a great source for learning how to shift from a traditional management style to that of the new paradigm, which is all about inclusivity, listening, and working collaboratively.
