We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Masiely Abreu a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Masiely, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Covid has brought about so many changes – has your business model changed?
COVID-19 definitely changed our business model for the better, I’d say. Prior to COVID-19 we used to only service Private Physician Offices, Assisted Living Facilities and Medical Centers around our community; during and after the pandemic our shift went more in home-based patients that did not want to go to a doctor’s office due to fear of getting infected the then “deadly disease” — Fast forward to 2022, we are now equally serving both in-house patients and private physician office settings, ALF’s and medical centers combined.
Masiely, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well first, thank you for reaching out to conduct this interview with hopes it can resonate with other young entrepreneurs and future leaders. I think we share that common goal from the get-go. So, where does one even begin?!
Some people may or may not know, but I was actually born and raised in Havana, Cuba and migrated to the United States with my family at the age of 12, speaking zero English. My first job was at 16, I was a cashier at a grocery store called Winn-Dixie and got quickly promoted to self-checkout if that even exists anymore. I remember walking to my then part-time job after school and on the weekends because I wanted $20.00 in my pocket that were mine, from my work, as opposed to $100.00 from my parents. This got instilled in me at a very early age, helping my mom sell “cheese” by the pound to neighbors back in Cuba was a hobby of mine, I got really good at it, and we even had a steady clientele! She had momentarily stopped her nursing career to attend to the family while my father did most of the heavy lifting working at a Cruise Ship Marina. They were and still are a team, so it’s safe to say that they are my role models in basically everything I do today. Then in 2004, we came to America; my mother resumed her nursing career, and my father became a savvy business owner, going on 15 years.
Fast forward to 2010, I graduated high school with nothing but average grades and a passion for healthcare. I joined an ultrasound school, studied & passed my boards, and graduated in 2013. I was fascinated over the idea of seeing inside someone’s body using high-frequency sound waves and creating a diagnostic image that could save lives. Before I could walk through graduation in the summer of 2013; I got offered a position as a Vascular and Cardiac Sonographer at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, I was the youngest sonographer on campus at the time and I trained with one of the best sonographers on campus, Ms. Angelia McCaskill, she took me under her wing during my sonography career. There, I created very strong relationships that most definitely contributed to the success of my mobile diagnostic medical imaging company, Concierge Diagnostics, which was founded in 2014.
I kept my “day job” for eight years while building Concierge Diagnostics, one referral partner and one patient at a time. Of course, that was with the help of magnificent then partners and mentors I surrounded myself with. Today, we work with over 60 referral partners throughout South FL, that be physicians, medical centers, concierge physicians and even hospitals, and we have over 400 patients in our medical database.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Engaging with your audience, posting content that they want to see. Sharing as much information as possible, before you try to “sell” them a product. Being authentic is key!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Relationships, relationships, relationships. Relationships with other individuals in your same field and sharing information. Following up and giving the best customer service to their patients – that also happen to be yours.
