We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Masaru Suyama a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Masaru, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I was a student, I liked to read manga and I also liked to come up with my own stories and doodle in my notebook. Gradually, I began to express my ideas as manga, and when I submitted my work to a magazine called Garo, I was selected as a finalist.
This was my first experience of publicly presenting my work, and it was the beginning of my decision to become an artist.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
When I was a student, I first became aware of my interest in creative activities and began creating manga, which I found to be the most familiar way of expression at the time. Soon I realized that my interest was in the pictures themselves rather than the cartoons with their stories, and I became a painter. Since I became a painter, my style has changed in many ways, but my unique use of color and composition to depict imaginary figures and slightly comical and cruel scenes is common to all and I believe it is the essence of my art. I would be honored if this is embraced by more people.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I used oil paints for a long time, but one day I switched to acrylics. I was hesitant to make the change before I switched, but when I tried them I found that they suited me very well and I wish I had tried them sooner.
I was hesitant to use sprays after switching to acrylic paints, but when I tried this I realized that it also produces very good effects.
I think you should try it as soon as you think of it, because if you make a mistake, you can just go back to the original.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Before I became interested in creative activities, I liked to read philosophy books from time to time. Greek philosophy, in particular, shows a naive search for the nature of nature, and I believe that this naivete has something in common with the search for art.
