We were lucky to catch up with Marylie Thompson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marylie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
Something has to be said for always trusting your gut. Especially in the photography business. If I was able to get a re-do on starting my photography business, I would tell my younger self to trust my gut more. Decisions have to be made constantly when running a business by yourself, and I spent too much time and money listening to others. In my early years of photography I obsessed over other photographers work way too much. I would follow them on social media, study them, copy them… yes copy their work at times. Until one day I unfollowed most of them and realized I had to focus on creating my brand, my style and shoot the way I wanted to shoot. I feel that it’s very easy to compare yourself to your peers, but the best thing you can do for you and your business, is to pour all of your energy in developing what’s yours. Creating my style became my focus, and from then on, I have made a name for myself. It has been a process that sometimes was difficult, but growing pains is all part of it. I proudly own a studio in Fort Worth, Texas, and love that clients put their trust in me and my team. Here we are almost 12-years in business, stronger than ever!

Marylie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Born and raised in Montreal, Canada, I have emerged as one of the top up & coming leading boudoir photographers in Dallas – Fort Worth. With over a decade’s experience as a boudoir photographer, I am known for my cutting edge style, clean and bright images and my desire to always push the envelope. My work has been featured in numerous commercial publications, including Arsenic Magazine.
To anyone who meets me, my passion for photography & beauty of women is obvious as I see everything around me as a source of inspiration. I believe that everyone has a story that will inspire others & you don’t need to have a great day or a bad day in order to live life… all you need is just to have a day.
I live in Dallas with my devoted husband and three amazing children. When I not working, I am spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy yoga, anything wellness, and shopping. I also love traveling to various locations to select my new favorite places to photograph clients.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has been word of mouth. I have never paid for advertisement during the course of our journey. I post my images on Instagram and Facebook, and deliver a great experience for each client that walks into the studio. Their experience and trust is what I focus on. When a client refers a friend to our studio, it is the biggest compliment.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It is so rewarding to create beautiful images that will last a lifetime. I have clients tell me all of the time, that they love looking at their images in their albums. Clients often shed tears during the revealing of their images. They get to see how beautiful and vulnerable they are, and that makes my heart happy.
