Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to MaryEllen Dorey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
MaryEllen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Like many people who pursue a wellness path, I had personal success with aromatherapy. From the time I was a kid, I felt that butterfly feeling in my stomach and sadness (and was too stubborn to ever take a medication for it!). I was an early adopter of a healthy lifestyle incorporating a vegetarian diet (not best for me), yoga, talk therapy, herbs and many other modalities.
When I moved to Dallas, TX, I found an aromatherapist. She recommended some aromatherapy based creams to me which I applied daily and within a few weeks, started to notice a lightness in my thoughts and in my body. The butterflies flew out of me. That got me curious to know more. I ended up studying aromatherapy for 3 years and getting my certification. Along the way, I learned reflexology (incorporating aromatherapy). I learned about an independent standards making organization called Aromatherapy Registration Council (ARC) and I sat for the qualifying exam and earned the R. A. designation (Registered Aromatherapist). I have maintained this credential since 2009.
I developed a full line of products for BodyCare, WellCare, SkinCare and Natural Perfumes. I have marketed these through my website (doreyaromatherapyandwellness.com) and in person retail and wholesale shows as well as blending custom formulations for my clients.
Similarly, I found Pilates through a trainer and was amazed at the differences in my body. After 30 years of yoga and 10 years of Pilates, I can speak to the differences. Yoga’s focus is relaxation and stretching. Pilates is all about building strength and balance by engaging the smaller muscles appropriately, proprioception and core strengthening. I continue my own practice of Pilates regularly.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My typical client is one who is dealing with some irksome issues that they want to resolve. They have explored both traditional and non-traditional approaches and seek me out primarily from word-of-mouth.
When they experience positive changes, they continue with reflexology, aromatherapy and Pilates.
My customized approach to wellness allows my clients to feel seen, heard and valued.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I keep in touch with my clients via their preferred method of communication-phone, text or email. After a treatment, I check in with them to find out how they are doing.
Most of the time, I see my reflexology/aromatherapy clients on a monthly basis; my Pilates clients every week. If travel (or life challenges) come up and we have been out of touch, I reach out.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I am a continuous learner. My knowledge has depth and range. This, along with my caring approach has kept my clients returning regularly for years.
Additionally, my workspace and business practices are consistent and professional. I never take my clients’ loyalty for granted. As a consumer, I have walked away from service providers that have not handled a situation well for me. I am cognizant that my clients feel the same way.
