We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maryann Roberts. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maryann below.
Hi Maryann, thanks for joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents were wonderful roles models to me and their relationship inspired me to become a professional matchmaker.
They were not at all alike if I think about their personalities but they balanced one another and they prioritized each other and our family over everything else in their lives.
They taught me that family is everything. Staying close to one another and being there for each other throughout our lives is something I try to prioritize as well in my life.
When I think of how my father lovingly looked at my mother, I want that for my clients.

Maryann, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a Professional Matchmaker for eight years. I have so many people ask me how they can also get involved in such a fun and interesting field of work. If you are passionate like I am about helping people find love then you already have the number one skill necessary! Matchmaking is on fire right now and many companies are hiring so check out LinkedIn jobs and start applying!
If you are 50+ and not really getting yourself out there, let’s book my 90 minute Don’t Wait to Date phone call where I give you real tools and a game plan to start dating again or for the first time. Gift cards for your friends and loved ones are available as well if you really want to support them in their dating journey.
Dating can be fun but to get started it’s just like an exercise plan. Sometimes we need a coach and we need motivation. Our dating muscle needs practice and our call together is just what you need to bounce back into dating.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
When I meet someone new I am always curious and want to find out if they are single or in a relationship. Whatever the answer is, I will ask more details about who they want to meet, do they have a type, and see if they want help in their dating life.
If they are with a partner I ask how they met and where they got married and I want to learn more about their “secret sauce” that keeps them together.
My clients are always referring their friends to me because they know I really enjoy my work. I am always positive for them even when they are feeling burnt out from dating.

Have you ever had to pivot?
When I moved to La Jolla from New York City on a whim in 2009, I did not research the job opportunities as much as I researched the weather and things to do here.
New York was very different because you could walk or take the subway to get around so easily so getting to and from work never took much time.
When I moved to La Jolla I had a car for the first time in five years and many of the jobs I was interested in involved long commutes on the 5 which cut into my sunset time.
Working in or near La Jolla became a mission for me and after applying on LinkedIn to a few companies I was hired as a matchmaker. I have been able to work remotely in this role giving me the flexibility to work from anywhere in the world.
