We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maryam Faison a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Maryam thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
I was always quiet growing up never really communicated with anyone like that, so I used art as my voice and to express whatever was going on in my head. So as I had gotten older I opened up more, and art became more challenging as the age of the internet became more accessible, everything was becoming more easier to learn and find, and that took a toll on me mentally because I wanted to learn how ideas were formed digitally, we hadn’t got internet til we were much older, so as I progressed into adulthood I started working with digital art and it was a learning experience for sure, if you messed up a piece you were creating you couldn’t just ball up a piece of paper nope you used a stylus, taking a risk was learning something new and I’ve been trying new techniques and experimenting with different methods of making my ideas come to life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi, my name is Maryam, I’m an artist and photographer, a native Detroiter.
I’ve always been an artsy person, But i’ve been into art most of my life, my art allowed me to find my individualism and voice. expressing myself through visual arts.
In 2018 I’ve honed into drawing digitally and it’s been a process but it’s been fun nonetheless, i enjoy creating both traditional and digital art And It’ll be my pleasure to showcase what’s going on in my mind.
In 2019-2025 I’ve created these detailed floral collages featuring and paying homage to black women living and non living giving them their flowers and safe space

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
Honestly I hate NFTs it’ takes away real art from artists and money that can be used for essentials like groceries and gas, things like that I prefer traditional and digital art it tells a real story of that person and their struggles

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Yes, so I’m currently in the process of creating these floral collages using black women, I chose to use us because we are the original trendsetters and we’re oftentimes not heard in spaces that tries to limit us and our creativity, culture and voices. I desire to create a safe space in the art realm. where we portray our softness in the world that deems us as loud and angry. And also to show young black girls that you can have your flowers while you are living and be your best self
