We recently connected with Marya Molette and have shared our conversation below.
Marya, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Over the past three years, I took a considerable risk, one that was not measured in financial terms, but in the profound investment I made in myself. I hired professional growth and personal development coaches to help me construct a mindset for success, particularly in the challenging realm of the business of birth. This journey wasn’t just about personal growth; it was about realizing a grand vision that required an impenetrable mindset.
As a labor and delivery nurse, I bore witness to two striking aspects of the birthing experience. Firstly, I observed women who yearned to have their births unfold in their way, only to be consistently told that birth is unpredictable, requiring openness and flexibility to change. However, my conviction grew as I witnessed women actually achieving the births of their dreams. I questioned why this reality was attainable for some and elusive for others.
The second observation was the discord among birth professionals. A clash of philosophies emerged – some believed in the need to control the birth room, while others championed the idea that mothers should be in charge of their births. This conflict resulted in unhappy births and dissatisfied healthcare professionals. Fueled by a desire for positive change, I embarked on a transformative journey of learning from luminaries like the late Bob Proctor and others in the personal growth and professional development field.
What I discovered was a fundamental truth: everything starts with the power of the mind. Armed with this insight, I began to believe that empowering women for an empowered birth experience necessitated fostering belief in their bodies and capabilities. Extending this understanding to healthcare workers, I envisioned a realm where a better grasp of the power of the mind could lead to remarkable results in the profession, particularly in helping women have empowered birth experiences.
My big and ultimate goal is nothing short of revolutionary – to eradicate birth trauma and create happier humans through a fundamental shift in the birthing experience. This isn’t just a personal aspiration; it’s a mission to reshape the narrative surrounding birth, bridge gaps between birth professionals, and bring about positive change for families and healthcare providers alike. The risk I took in investing in myself is now a driving force behind a vision that seeks to transform the very fabric of the business of birth, one empowered experience at a time.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey began when I took my first step into the Air Force in 2000, serving as a medic in emergency services. Fast forward to 2008, and I decided to embark on a new chapter by entering nursing school, graduating in 2010. The initial motivation was to commission and become an officer for financial reasons, little did I know that this path would lead me to a profound calling.
The turning point came during my first year as a labor and delivery nurse. My own disappointing experience with my son’s emergent cesarean section triggered a deep emotional response. It wasn’t until I saw other women receiving better support and having more positive birth experiences that I realized the impact of my own disappointment. This realization fueled a protective instinct towards women’s birth and postpartum experiences, driving me to learn as much as I could.
I delved into a doula workshop to enhance comfort measures and furthered my knowledge by exploring myofascia release for easier labor. This journey led me to become a certified personal trainer, corrective exercise specialist, and fitness nutrition specialist, recognizing the importance of conditioning the body for birth and supporting women through their postpartum recovery.
As my expertise in soft tissue mobilization grew, I created a birth workshop called “Dysfunctional Labor Maneuvers.” This workshop was designed for birth professionals, equipping them with the knowledge to assist women facing difficult or challenging labors and preventing unnecessary cesareans.
My exploration didn’t stop at the physical aspects; I delved into the mindset, guided by the teachings of Bob Proctor. Recognizing the interconnection between mindset and physical preparation, I underwent Proctor’s training to become a mindset coach. With a desire to support women comprehensively through their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey, I integrated mindset coaching and bodywork, giving birth to my own coaching program – “The Natural Birth & Beyond Method.”
In the process, I encountered energy medicine therapies – the Body Code and Emotion Code. Intuitively recognizing their significance, I seamlessly incorporated them into my coaching program. This holistic approach acknowledges that the body is not just physical but also energy. Today, my birth coaching program stands as a one-of-a-kind creation, born from my experiences as a nurse, a bodyworker, and an energy medicine practitioner.
This all-inclusive birth coaching program is more than just a profession; it’s a passion-driven mission to support women from pregnancy through birth and into postpartum. It encapsulates mind, body, and energy, reflecting the unique journey that led to its creation.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
In my journey as a birth professional and coach, I’ve found that beyond training and knowledge, understanding the power of the mind has been the most impactful factor for success in my field. Learning about the intricacies of paradigms and recognizing their potential to limit one’s potential has been a game-changer.
Paradigms are essentially mental models or frameworks that shape our perceptions and behaviors. Through my exploration of the teachings of experts like Bob Proctor, I gained insights into how paradigms can either empower or restrict us. Understanding this concept has allowed me to navigate and challenge limiting beliefs, both within myself and the individuals I work with.
By grasping the power of the mind and acknowledging the influence of paradigms, I’ve realized that the only thing that truly stops us is ourselves. It’s not just external factors or circumstances but the internal narratives and beliefs we hold. This awareness has been transformative, enabling me to help women not only prepare physically for childbirth but also cultivate a mindset that aligns with their desired birth experience.
In the realm of birth coaching, where emotions, fears, and expectations play a significant role, recognizing and reshaping limiting paradigms becomes crucial. Empowering women to understand that their mindset is a powerful tool in shaping their birth experience has been instrumental in achieving success in my field. It’s about breaking through mental barriers and empowering individuals to believe in their capabilities and the potential for positive outcomes.
In summary, beyond technical skills and knowledge, understanding the power of the mind and recognizing the impact of paradigms on personal potential has been the most valuable aspect of my journey. This realization has not only transformed my approach as a birth professional but has also allowed me to guide others in overcoming self-imposed limitations and achieving empowering birth experiences.
