We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mary Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mary, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
I expect family and friends to spread the word about my business but not necessarily to buy from me. I realize family and friends might not be my target customer, whose problem I can solve, and that’s ok. With this being my second business venture, I realize most customers have been people in my surrounding area who could really use what I had to offer. I don’t think it’s appropriate to expect family and friends to automatically buy from me unless they really need videography, audio production, or need a training video built from scratch. Going to business school also taught me to focus on a target customer. One way I do this is by having a specific customer persona in mind: Who’s someone I know that is my ideal customer? Where do they shop? What do they need? Which ads would get their attention?, etc.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a Detroit native and graduate of King High school who grew up on the Eastside of the city. I decided to recently start a media business as a way to uplift millennials and put some positive messages out, as people struggle with mental health issues, housing problems, debt, etc. One part of Higher Media focuses on creating uplifting content and the other focuses on bringing customer ideas to life. Higher Media offers start to finish production of original videos for things like trainings, commercials, and events. Also if someone wants to convert a book to an audiobook, we provide production and voiceover services. Higher Media solves the problem that customers have with getting quality equipment when cell phone video quality can’t get the job done. Script writing and location scouting are also available and Higher Media can manage the entire production process. What sets us apart is being able to assist a customer from start to finish from idea to final production of video or audio. Someone who’s never completed a project before can come to us and get a full-service experience without having to work with multiple vendors.
We also offer rental products to help create the look and feel of the production. Whether you’re creating a music video, tutorial, or orientation video for new team members, Higher Media is your partner in getting everything done in a creative, organized, and timely manner.

If you have multiple revenue streams in your business, would you mind opening up about what those streams are and how they fit together?
Besides video, audio, and training production, we offer rental products that support a production or event like commercial quality backdrops, uplighting, and photobooth rental. These items can be custom designed for any production and combined to create a unique set. Don’t know where to start to build a unique set? Contact us for a free design consultation that’s based on your production.

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I sell services on my website: highermedia.tv . The goal is to allow customers to buy through one site so they aren’t clicking around multiple windows. This should make things more convenient. A con to this method is customers may be more familiar with other platforms like Amazon and Etsy but as a business you may have to incur higher costs with those platforms.
