We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mary Veal. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mary below.
Alright, Mary thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success is a relative term. I think success in business means you also have a balanced life. Time for family, friends, hobbies and rest. Being a small business owner, you want the business to do well and serve your clients but also fit your own lifestyle. All business and no play leads to quick burnout. It’s important to find ways to be productive and still enjoy a happy and balanced life.
Mary, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been practicing yoga and meditation for over 25 years. I became a yoga teacher to share my passion and the huge benefits I experienced from yoga. Having arthritis and major back issues, the physical benefits were tremendous. But what surprised me was the mental and emotional benefits that came along too. Focus, mindfulness, stress reduction, were all greatly improved. I own a yoga studio in Jupiter, Fl, Green Tara Yoga, that shares practices to bring these same benefits to all students. Having an affordable studio that caters to all populations is a huge asset to our community. We offer all types of yoga including Chair, Baby & Me, Gentle, Vinyasa, Yin, Restorative, Stretch and more. I’ve also taken my teaching international by leading yoga retreats around the world. I love combing my passions for yoga and travel! I’ve taken groups to Egypt, India, Africa, Iceland, Mexico, Peru and the Galapagos. In 2023, we will be traveling to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It’s wonderful to travel with caring and kind yogis. We have so much fun enjoying the world together.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Your reputation is not only about the quality of your service or product. It’s also about your interaction with people. You can’t fake it. People can tell. Being yourself and genuinely caring about your clients or customers will leave an impression. My reputation as a yoga teacher is that I’m “authentic”. I don’t pretend to be perfect or have all the answers. I share real life with my students. I try to take an interest in their life and guide them to the teachings that will help the most.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Word of mouth and social media. Word of mouth is important because most people are hesitant to take their first yoga class. They need encouragement from a friend to just show up. We periodically do campaigns with “first class free” cards and give them to current students to hand it to friends or family. The students are spreading the word about yoga and our studio. Social media helps inform current students or new students of our class schedule, new teachers and special events, It’s a daily remind to come to yoga!
