We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mary Tabor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Being an artist/creative is not always the most welcoming and easy path, but it’s one path I will take over and over again. There’s times where I wish I had desk job with steady pay, benefits, normal hours. But I always remind myself, that being born with a creative mind is a special gift and to not use it would be a waste.
There will always be bumps in an artist road, you have to work harder than some to make a living but for me creating something no ones else could, sure there’s other dance instructors but I choreographed a dance special just for a couple for their wedding day. And when you get videos/photos back from their dance with true happiness and love in their eyes it makes all the struggles a 100% worth it!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a wedding dance instructor, I help couples with their first dance on their big day! Weddings can already be stressful enough, I help them not only feel confident but also beautiful when they share their first dance as a married couple. But I don’t only stop at wedding couples, I also teach social dancing as well. To me, a lesson for a date night is so much better than going to the movies. I never make it feel like a ‘lesson’ I always want it to feel like a fun date night!
I love what I do, and when couples sending me videos of their first dance on their big day… it just warms my heart! Seeing the dress twirl around and watching their faces as they finish with a dip, I love it!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Seeing the final product for sure! When the dance is done and I get to watch my couples all dressed up at their wedding it’s just so beautiful! And knowing that I created the dance they did on their special day is such a wonderful feeling!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to expand my knowledge and keep learning. I never want to do the same thing over and over. I want to find new moves and steps so my couples can know that their dance is made just for the both of them!
