We recently connected with Mary Scott and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
In order to be successful, it takes a mindset that refuses to quit. As an entrepreneur you have to remove all words with any negative connotation. You have to erase from your memory the meaning of failure because it is never an option. Success takes commitment, A positive attitude, and you always have to believe in yourself and your dream. You have to spend the majority of your time focusing on the end goal because there will be hundreds and hundreds of set backs and bumps in the road that will distract you. You also have to be healthy enough for the journey mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. And that is the key to success.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I graduated with a masters degree in nursing in 2017 and started my own hair company in 2019. Today just over 4 years of launching my company, I am a well known celebrity hairstylist currently residing in Los Angeles California. The major problem I solved for the community is making hair extensions affordable for all. A lot of people suffer from alopecia, hair loss from chemotherapy, as well as burn survivors who were never able to grow their own hair. My company enables people from any background and any financial status to be able to afford luxury hair at wholesale prices. They can even start their own hair business if they choose to do so because all prices are wholesale with fast 1-3 day shipping. My business empowers everyone and takes away the strain of the high cost of the beauty industry. When you look good, you feel even better and having beautiful hair should not cost the same as a mortgage payment.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I was in a relationship with a person that turned out to be very jealous of me. One day he got very upset and stole all of my inventory and vandalized my brand new vehicle. I lost everything I had worked so hard for. He wanted to destroy me and my company and everything that I had worked so hard for. I cried, a lot. I was so hurt that I trusted this individual and they turned out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I had to take a break and refocus. I took time off to get better at cutting and styling wigs for customs orders, I took detailed classes on how to do makeup and color hair better. I was more determined than ever and I used all of the down time I had to get better and perfect my craft. I rebranded my business and relocated to another state. Starting over was not easy but it made me better. I kept believing in the dream God placed on my heart and I reached new levels.
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
The story mentioned was definitely a near death experience for myself and my business. My jealous ex harassed me for months after he destroyed my car and stole my inventory/belongings. It took a lot of faith to keep me going but I always knew that God had a greater calling for my life. I had come to far for God to leave me with nothing.
