We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mary Sahagian. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mary below.
Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Hope and Celebrate is a fine jewelry company that is based out of Los Angeles, California. Our jewelry was founded on the two factors we apply in our daily lives. The ongoing HOPE we look forward to and the CELEBRATIONS that follow. We knew right away we wanted to include these two words because we can all relate. It is perfect for the dainty and minimal pieces we create that celebrate Motherhood, Friendships, and Milestones.
Mary, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Mary and I am the designer and owner behind Hope & Celebrate Jewelry. I started the company is 2014 when I became a mother of 2. I wanted to create pieces that are minimal, meaningful and that celebrate life’s moments. When designing each piece, I always like to put myself in the place of the person wearing it. I picture the jewelry being worn every day. Whether you’re in jeans and a tee (which I usually am) or dressed for a night out, each piece is made to tell your story. The idea behind each design is made with the everyday woman in mind. These are pieces that hold meaning whether it’s the initial of someone you love or their birthstone. It’s a twist on classic pieces that are meant to be your Everyday 14K. What sets us apart from others in the industry is that our jewelry is made in our manufacturing where we have total control over production. That means, everything is made in house and each piece is custom made for you.
Have you ever had to pivot?
As a mother, it has been a challenge to start and grow a company while raising two little ones. The early days of H&C back in 2014 looked different than it does today. Our product line was gold filled at the time and focused mainly on hand stamping. While it was a great outlet for me to express my creativity, it was also time consuming and hard to grow. I was ready to take it from a hobby and turn it into a business, 2020 was the year that shifted things around here. Pandemic gave me the time to pivot and I began offering a line that is 14K Gold while still holding true to what the company was founded on. I know that wearing jewelry that you have an emotional or meaningful attachment to is necessary. Our pieces are handcrafted with love and just do that.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Hands down, the best source of new clients are the referrals our clients make. In my opinion, this is the best form of a compliment. When someone refers a friend over because they absolutely love their jewelry tells us that we’re doing something right. They know they will receive great customer service and get an heirloom piece that they designed themselves. Sure, social media is great and beneficial for small businesses, but the true testament comes from the one wearing it.
