Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mary Phipps. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Mary thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
One of the most defining moments of my life occurred shortly after I moved to Kansas City in 2015. I chose to move here to be closer to my boyfriend (now husband) who was in chiropractic school at cleveland chiropractic college. One night he took me to a meet and greet with several chiropractors following a seminar. One of the doctors asked me what I did for a living and I must have explained with little to no enthusiasm because immediately he asked me if I had ever thought about going to chiropractic school. I laughed it off and shook my head no. To be quite honest, the thought had never crossed my mind. Not because I wasn’t uninterested in helping people but because I never thought I could ever be capable of being any sort of doctor! For the first time I experienced what it was like to have someone see something in me that I couldn’t see in myself: the potential to do more. I didn’t leave that night immediately thinking I should go to chiropractic school but it did plant the seed. Shortly after that, I started to look into options, and everything honestly just fell together. I found my path–or should I say my calling had found me?–all thanks to a simple conversation.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Going through school, I had originally thought I wanted to work with people who were struggling with mental health — largely because of my own past struggles. I even took extra training and went to seminars to help me specialize in helping teenagers and adults with anxiety, depression, bipolar, etc. That was until I gave birth to our first daughter. I absolutely fell head over heels in love with her (of course) and everything related to the birth process. Pregnancy, birth and the journey to motherhood are three of the most beautiful processes we have the gift of experiencing. It became my passion to care for women throughout their health journey as well as their families. I have seen children/families heal, I have gotten to go to births, I have seen first time parents and repeat parents shortly after they’ve brought new life into the world. I have been so blessed to be part of many peoples’ journeys and it has been so incredibly rewarding and humbling. I really cannot imagine doing anything other than what I’m getting to do now. God has truly blessed me with this work.
Can you talk to us about your experience with buying businesses?
My husband and I purchased our practice while I was actually still in chiropractic school! The process was humbling, to say the least. We were extremely naive but with the help of an amazing support system, we had some help navigating the process! We chose to purchase an existing practice because it was an awesome opportunity, and my husband knew he wanted to practice on his own from the start. The process took about 2 months to complete from the very start to finish! We had amazing help from a contract lawyer and many other professionals. It wasn’t an easy process but it was definitely worth it.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Absolutely, hands-down I would choose what I get to do over and over again! There is nothing like getting to be part of healing whether it’s a baby who was struggling to latch, a kiddo that finally sleeps through the night or a woman who has experienced terrible periods her whole life. When the body is not healing, in any capacity, the nervous system is not functioning optimally. When optimal nervous system function is restored, that’s when lives change!
