We were lucky to catch up with Mary Myers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mary, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I have taken would definitely have to be quitting my job to open my own business. Going back to early 2022, I was only 22 years old and had made the decision that I was going to quit my job working for someone as a lash artist for two years and open my own lash boutique. I had built a very loyal clientele in a short time and wanted more for myself. With being so young of course I was terrified, I had so much learning and growing to do. I had went out and looked for a suite to rent, and found the perfect place so I signed for it a few days later. I will say quitting my job was the scariest knowing I could fail, but I was determined to succeed. This was the first time I really took a risk and invested in myself and it was so worth it. My business has been open for over a year and it was the best decision I ever made for myself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For those who don’t know me my name is Mary Myers and I own a eyelash extension boutique. My journey in this industry began in 2018 when I graduated high school and enrolled in cosmetology school. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life but I was always into beauty. I quickly learned that being a hairstylist was not a great fit, so once I graduated in 2019, I decided to further my knowledge and took a class to be certified in eyelash extensions. I absolutely loved it! I was hired by a small business and quickly began growing my clientele. I worked there for 2 years until I decided to quit and open up my own business. I had fallen in love with making women feel beautiful and everyday I achieve that. There is nothing more rewarding when completing my service and seeing their faces with how big of a difference eyelash extensions can really make. I do my absolute best to provide the most comfortable, relaxing, and memorable service to everyone that walks in my door. I am the most proud of my work and customer service. I worked so hard to perfect my skill, and to make everyone feel so welcome and appreciated. I would not be where I am today without my amazing clients.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele was through building a very strong relationship with the clients I already had at the time, and provided discounts on services for referring new clients to my business, therefore it motivates your clients to bring you more business. I give discounts for writing reviews online for my business as well. I also post consistently on social media, following local businesses within my industry, and reaching out to potential clients.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think what helped build my reputation was getting to know my clients, making sure they are comfortable throughout the service, listening to them, and understanding the goals they are looking to achieve. Being kind to one another goes such a long way because you never know what someone is going through. I make sure to treat everyone with respect and I never let someone leave my suite unsatisfied.
