Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mary Morelion. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mary, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
SheDid is a digital beauty brand that offers web design, makeup artistry, and beauty chemistry services. What makes SheDid unique is its use of digital software to help clients visualize their makeup looks before application. The process involves three steps: taking a photo of the client, applying digital makeup to that photo, and then replicating the look in real life. SheDid also offers custom cosmetics, where foundations are tailored to a client’s specific skin tone and type. Clients can observe the creation of their personalized foundation during a 2-3 hour appointment with the Digital Beauty Alchemist.
Mary, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Mary Morelion and I’m a Digital Beauty Alchemist. I am the owner and founder of SheDid. How did I get into my industry? Well from a young age, I was influenced by two worlds: beauty and technology. My mother’s talent in hairstyling and makeup, combined with my uncle’s expertise in computers, sparked my interest in both makeup artistry and technology. My mom and her best friend took me to a Mary Kay party where I learned to put on makeup and was inspired to begin exploring it, and I was further captivated by the artistry of my cousin-in-law and mother during my bridal preparations in my early 20s. At 15, I started learning about the digital world from my uncle. I continued to nurture digital learning while balancing college and motherhood. Over time, my passion for both makeup and web design grew, becoming an obsession that I continued to nurture then eventually took a leap of faith in combining the two skills.
At SheDid, we offer web design, makeup artistry, and beauty chemistry services. We combine digital tech and beauty, which allows our services to be tailored to our clients.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I changed my career but it came most oddly. I used to work in mental health. My ambition was to be a Psychiatrist. So I was working and going to school to make that happen. I did want to have more children but my husband was done having children. He felt that two was enough. However, that did not turn out to be the case. In 2016, I received a call from my brother while at work to step in because DHS was removing his children. I did not want to see any children in our family end up in the system. I immediately told my husband who said “Find out what we need to do” so we started the process to get our nephew and step-niece from the system. It took us two years to ensure this would happen. Although things looked like it would not happen, it did. God’s hand was in this. We received a phone call in March 2018 that the kids were coming home with us. I cried tears of joy. When we got the children it was a process. The transition seemed simple but it wasn’t. My niece was struggling with the adjustment. We found out so many horrible things that her mother did to her and was planning to do to my nephew. It was horrifying. I had to take some time away from school and work. Over the next year, while my daughter was healing I started playing with makeup again. This developed and was encouraged by a sister who gifted me my first makeup kit. I decided at this point to change my career and go into beauty.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The client’s word of mouth has helped me build my reputation.
