We recently connected with Mary Mastren-williams and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary, thanks for joining us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
For years, I toiled away in isolation, crafting art in my home studio. While social media offered some connection, I yearned for a more tangible artistic community. That all changed when I joined Atithi Studios in Pittsburgh.
This vibrant artist co-op has been a game-changer for my career. Surrounded by talented peers and guided by a supportive mentor, I’ve found inspiration, collaboration, and a newfound sense of belonging. Thanks to Atithi, I’ve successfully held shows, acquired commissions, and even landed a gallery representation. It’s a testament to the power of community in fostering creativity and driving artistic growth.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For over two decades of artmaking and teaching, I’ve been captivated by the expressive qualities of watercolor. Its unpredictable nature, the way colors bleed and blend, has always resonated with my own artistic journey. After exploring various mediums, I found my true calling in watercolor’s ability to capture the essence of a scene or object in a raw, organic way.
I’m passionate about creating a diverse range of watercolor works, from intimate, affordable pieces to large-scale, show-stopping masterpieces. Whether I’m working with a seasoned collector or a client just discovering the beauty of watercolor, I make works to suit every taste and budget.
Beyond my own artistic pursuits, I’m dedicated to sharing my knowledge and passion with others. I love teaching workshops, guiding students through the therapeutic process of watercolor painting, and helping them unlock their own creative potential.
What sets my work apart is my commitment to using highly pigmented paints and embracing the inherent unpredictability of the medium. I believe this approach results in vibrant, dynamic pieces that are both visually stunning and emotionally resonant.
Ultimately, my goal is to inspire and connect with others through the transformative power of art. Whether a collector is seeking a beautiful addition to their home or a client is seeking a creative outlet for themselves, I invite others to explore the world of watercolor with me and discover the magic that lies within.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the most pivotal moments in my career was a particularly challenging rejection. While I’ve faced setbacks before, this one felt deeply personal and unjust. Rather than allowing it to define me, I decided to channel that disappointment into a renewed determination.
I had been teaching art in an elementary school for many years, and when a high school position opened up in my district, I felt confident in my ability to fill the role. Despite my qualifications and experience, I was unexpectedly rejected. I was told my masters degree and 16 years experience wasn’t enough. A younger, newer teacher was hired instead. It was a difficult pill to swallow, but it ignited a fire within me.
Instead of dwelling on the negative, I focused on proving myself. I doubled down in my artmaking, rented a studio, and honed my skills. I was determined to show what I was capable of.
Through perseverance and dedication, I achieved significant milestones. I held a successful gallery show, joined a vibrant artist community, and even started creating instructional videos. My artistic journey not only validated my abilities but also brought me immense personal fulfillment.
While I may never know if those who rejected me ever reconsidered their decision, the experience taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and self-belief. It fueled my passion for art and propelled me towards a more fulfilling and authentic career path.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the profound sense of fulfillment it brings. The act of creation is a form of self-expression, a way to connect with my inner world and share my unique perspective with others.
Even if I were never able to make a living from my art, the process itself would be invaluable. It’s a source of joy, a way to manage stress, and a tool for personal growth. Art has helped me make sense of the world, find peace within myself, and cultivate a positive mindset.
I’m incredibly fortunate to have built a career around my passion. But beyond the professional rewards, it’s the intrinsic value of creativity that truly sustains me. The ability to express myself freely, to leave a mark on the world, and to inspire others is a gift I cherish every day.
