Mary, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I always knew that I was going to work in a creative field. From the time I was in elementary school, the only job I wanted when I grew up was to be “an artist.” I didn’t care if that meant being a painter, a graphic designer, a chef, etc. – i just knew that I needed to do something with my creativity.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was always the friend in high school who knew how to do winged liner, and to this day, it is still my absolute favorite part of doing makeup. While I was the family member/friend makeup artist of the group, my career began when I started working for MAC Cosmetics at the age of 19. Though the first year was incredibly difficult, this opportunity taught me discipline & passion. No matter how hard the day was, I would keep showing up for my shift & continue to try my best. After a long 5 years of various positions, experiences, and colleagues, I had finally reached a level where I was able to make a justifiable living through freelancing. It has now been nearly 10 years since I’ve picked up my first professional makeup brush in that MAC store, and I still feel as excited as I did that day. For me, doing makeup truly does not feel like work – it feels like I’m back in high school, hanging out with my friends & making each other feel beautiful. That feeling is what I hope to provide to all of my clients when they sit in my chair.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is simply the fact that I get to be apart of a person’s individual history. Every time a client books me for a wedding, a baby shower, or even a photoshoot, I feel blessed. To know that someone is trusting me for something so important to them is truly such an incredible honor.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The driving force to succeed in a creative industry is definitely lead by my inner child. As I said previously, a creative field was never a question for me, it was just a matter of what medium I would fall into.
