We were lucky to catch up with Mary Marsh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mary thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
Customer experience is just as important as providing quality work. When meeting with potential clients for weddings/events I will always pay for their coffee or drink. It’s not much but it shows that I care about them and will take care of them throughout the process. I also tend to shoot hybrid film and digital and after I shoot a session or a wedding/event I will scan the instant film/polaroids and add them to their digital gallery. Once the films are scanned I will write a thank you card and mail their instant films to them so they have a physical reminder of their session/wedding/event.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Mary and I own and operate Mary Marsh Media with the help of my amazing husband Wiresh. I grew up in a small town outside of Virginia Beach and moved to Central Florida in 2013. I have been shooting for the past 15 years and am so grateful to have had the support of my family, friends and clients. I am primarily a wedding/event photographer but I have a passion for capturing beauty in every form and I just LOVE love. Being chosen to capture the most precious moments is the biggest honor of my life and I know that I’m lucky to be one of the few people who absolutely loves what I do for a living.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, I think the most rewarding thing about my job is showing people how beautiful they are. My favorite way that I do this is during boudoir shoots. I provide mimosas and love watching people go from really nervous and timid to really empowered goddesses!
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I think that it is hard for non-creatives to understand that this is how we make money and pay our bills. Typically you get what you pay for. If you are wanting a free/low budget photographer, the work and service that you are provided match the budget that you have.
