We recently connected with Mary-Lynn Corbin and have shared our conversation below.
Mary-Lynn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
Most business owners debate back and forth every once in awhile if they should go back to their day job, or get a part time job. This normally happens when they start to lack motivation, have a slow week, or feel like the career they chose isn’t their true passion. That’s where the ambition and passion has to kick in. Every business owner knows that this business life doesn’t only come with just the positives.
I can truly say I am genuinely happy as a business owner. Yes there was a time where i quit, for six months actually. Then i remembered the first job that i had at 16, a McDonald’s Crew member. I thought about all of the negatives when it came to that job and it forced me to level up every time I felt like quitting my career. Ever since i was a child I never liked taking orders from others, especially if it was something I really didn’t want to do. I always did my own thing, never followed the crowd, and didn’t really participate in group projects when I was a student. I literally cried during the second week of my first job because i whispered to myself on the first day, “I could never do this for the rest of my life.”
From then on, I had a new job every three months from 2016-2018. I know, it sounds terrible and it was. Each job i had made me realize that I had no choice but to find a hobby that was enjoyable and paid the bills. I worked in customer service for my last two “normal jobs” at Red Robin, and a Jewelers associate at Pandora. My co-workers became family and i stayed at both jobs for 5-6 months. It was bittersweet when I had to quit but i had to remember the end goal, which was to continue my career with lashing.
When I quit, I had to work those two jobs to help build up supplies, pay for my LLC, furniture, and much more. I worked at pandora until my profit from my career was more than my check from my part time job. So after awhile my part time checks were really just play money! One thing that made me never quit my career again was that I kept telling myself the same statement with every part job I had, “I can never work for someone ever again,” so I made that happen.
Mary-Lynn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a Licensed Esthetician for 2 years, and I have 4 years of experience in the eyelash extension industry. I got into the industry when I decided that I love servicing and teaching women, but also making them feel and look confident. I provide services such as Eyelash Extensions, Eyelash Education, and Teeth Whitening.
The issues that I help solve for my clients are their self confidence and income. I love enhancing a woman’s beauty and seeing their reaction once the service is done. It makes me feel as if me and the client both got our moneys worth! What sets me apart from most people in the beauty industry is that i genuinely want to teach others how to start a lucrative career. Teaching is my favorite part when it comes to my career. Yes it can become overwhelming at times but it’s worth it once you start to see your students progress.
What I am most proud of is that I have serviced almost 1000 women and have rarely had any issues with any of them, I’ve never experienced allergic reactions or situations where things could have gotten out of hand. I take pride in my customer service because I want my clients and students to feel as comfortable as possible when it comes to my services.
The main thing i want potential clients and students to know about my brand and I, is that it is meant to help women grow and change their lives. If I am able to increase the income of one student, then my goal is to be able to do that for multiple students. Same for my clients, if i can make one feel beautiful after a lash service, then i plan on doing that for multiple women as well, because it makes both of us happy.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
The way i built my social media presence was by getting in front of the camera! No one knows who you are when you just post/promote your products almost everyday. No matter how good the quality of your service or product is, no one knows who you are. So why do you expect them to pay for service or product when they could easily get it from someone else offering the same exact thing, maybe even at a lower cost? When you build your rapport and trust with your target audience, your work stands out and then the quality speaks for itself. Especially in an industry that is oversaturated, The clients will keep coming back because you’ve made it to a point to stand out!
My advice to business owners would be to:
– Make reels pertaining to real life situations in your industry.
– Let your audience know who you are, explain what you do and why you do it.
– Tell your audience your goals, what’s meant for you will always be for you even if you feel like someone might “steal” the idea.
– Create educational content, whether it’s a tutorial video of how you do what you do, or just a simple post on how to better themselves in their industry.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The strategies I’ve used to build my clientele include social media content creation and loyalty systems. I actually discuss all of this in my new E-book called “The Legal Way,” where i give a few tips on how to get started with your own business as a beginner. In order to attract the clientele that you want, it is important to create content directed towards your dream clients. As for the loyalty systems i use, I reward my loyal clients for continually coming back for more of my services.. This is a great way to give back to clients who have stuck with you for months or years. Some ways you could give back are: – Giving out discounts after a certain amount of appointments have been booked.
– Referral programs, where if your client brings potential clients to you, they can receive a reward/discount.
– Gift cards of gifts from your clients favorite stores, or doing giveaways.
