We recently connected with Mary Jane Segura and have shared our conversation below.
Mary Jane , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I always have taught my daughters to be strong , independent women, to follow your heart, and always help others. I started my business during covid. I saw that there was a great need to educate our Conjunto and Tejano Artist. I started in the music industry at the age of 15, and have always had a passion to help others. During Covid , many of our Pioneers , were passing away and many family members would ask me to help find out about music royalties and ownership of the music, and much more. I was exclusive for a few years to Epi and Friends. After a stroke and covid I decided that there was a great need to educate and help. I began Red Head Creative Services. I help with registration for Songwriters/ Publishers in the PRO. I help set up music thru the digital platforms, and much more. I believe it’s important for our music artist and families are aware of their rights . Education and Preservation of our Culture is extremely important to me. I want to be remembered as someone who enjoyed helping others because it was the right thing to do. It all comes down to the golden rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. My peers know that I am a genuine person with a big heart and love to see others succeed. If I can make a difference , I know I did something right.

Mary Jane , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began in the music industry at the age of 15. I was one of the youngest female radio personalities at 16 yr. I learned from many dj’s at Houston’s KQQK, KYST, and of course Super Tejano 108 FM . I am not the person , I am today, without the guidance of those that saw my passion, my potential , and my ability to never give up. I had many of my peers lead me to my path, Tony J of KQQK would send me an assignments to get records before they were released to the other radio stations. JJ Jimmenez , would give my official radio name CC Castillo. Who knew that I would still be active in this industry as a radio dj, marketing director, songwriter, publisher, Tejano ROOTS Hall of Famer ( class of 2018) and also just recently in July. I was honored as an inductee for the Tejano Legends Houston’s Official Chapter . These 2 awards are extremely important because of the recognition of the State Of Texas , I am part of Texas History for my contributions to our Tejano/ Conjunto music industry, as a woman in a male dominated industry. My family for generations to come will be able to look into the archives at the University of Houston or the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame museum in Alice, Texas and be proud of contributions to preserve our music culture and way of life for many years after I am gone. I love that I can maintain a full time job and have my small business and hobbies( as we like to call them) internet radio show . You can catch our show on Friday evenings SCP Radio.com. SCPTV.net, and you can reach me on my Red Head Creative Service Page or website wwwredroomrecordz.com

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe that being direct and honest , being a genuine person helped build my reputation. I would not ever want to steer you wrong. I have always had Red Curly Hair, love music, and believe it our not, that’s my trademark. That is how I am known in this industry. I believe in helping others in protecting our culture thru education and preservation.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The fact that I can help an individual or family in maintaining their music rights, registration , thru education is my reward. My life experience has guided me to write songs in which I never thought would be possible. I love the fact that I can incorporate all the different aspect of the Tejano/ Conjunto music industry . Find a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life. I love what I do. I find that my business Red Head Creative Services allows me to use my passion and energy to destress myself from my actual “real” full time retail job. I can have the best of both worlds and I believe the music keeps me young.
