We were lucky to catch up with Mary Jane recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mary Jane, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I do often wish I learned how to make music earlier, mostly because I did attempt to get started with music 3 different occasions in my life but wasn’t ready to focus and to fully dedicate the hours like I have now. When I was 17 I made my first ever song with my best friend. Unfortunately he passed away, taking his passwords with him and any access to the beautiful song we wrote, forever stuck in his computer.. Later at 21 I attempted to learn the Cubase production software that my mom uses to make music but did not enjoy the workflow and never finished anything. So then I turned to Ableton but was too busy turning 21 in Miami, teaching yoga and becoming a DJ to truly learn the software. Eventually I finally found the right music teacher who taught me how to commit and understand Ableton, Shoutout to Camiel Daamen, from Lessons In Live. I stopped going out to the club “studying” the DJ’s and I spent the last 2 and a half years at my computer, almost every day without fail. It has taken a lot of time and I would be a better producer right now if I had started sooner, but everything has happened in such a beautiful but realistic way, its been humbling and very rewarding. I’m just grateful to be making good music now, finally after years of trying. Luckily I had never stopped writing songs in my phone notes, so I have years of good stuff that I will turn into music.

Mary Jane, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I grew up in Canada with a very musical mother who taught herself how to produce music, play the guitar and she’s an amazing singer/songwriter. I spent my entire life thinking that I would be making music one day too, learning a few instruments here and there when I was young, and I was always writing little songs. Eventually I moved out of Canada and found the magical city of Miami and then surprise! I became a DJ. I spend my evenings and many of my days DJ’ing for a living, and then my weekdays and any open weeknights are spent in the studio making music of all sorts. There’s nothing I love more than music, and I can only hope to share that feeling with others, by making really good music. Lately I’ve finally been able to reach more people, with the right team and support. I recently got to perform and close out iii Points music festival in Miami, an iconic homegrown event, which has already opened many doors for me. There will many big upcoming opportunities where I will be able to share all the new music I’ve been working on.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I believe music is medicine and with the right attunement it can heal people. Believe me people need music, and if I can provide some pieces of art that may live on forever that would make me happy as well. Music has made me feel things that are otherworldly, so I’ve learned how to share that. and help people connect to more, through music.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Well when I was 19 years old I packed up a big back pack and got on a greyhound bus, leaving my mother, and my home, headed to Kentucky, where I was somehow born. I tried living with my father, and grandparents but it didn’t work out. Luckily I met a girl who changed my life, she brought me to Florida for my 20th birthday and I promised I would live there. So I got all of my things and I drove down to Florida making myself a nomad. I went to my first rave, music festival and burn, which lead me in all the right directions, making the right friends and finding my way home to Miami, submerging myself in electronic music.
