We recently connected with Mary Engelken and have shared our conversation below.
Mary, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Interior design has been a lifelong passion of mine, and during the pandemic, I took the plunge to turn it into a career. Friends and family sought my help, prompting me to make a career pivot after my third child in 2021.
I went back to school to further develop my skills, emphasizing crucial technology platforms like AutoCAD and SketchUp. These tools have been game-changers, allowing me to present my designs clearly to clients. While I knew I had an eye for design, I recognized the importance of formalizing my skills, particularly in leveraging technology for design execution.
Another invaluable lesson I took away from my time in design school was the importance of building meaningful relationships. Whether with clients, vendors, or contractors, fostering these connections has been pivotal. Establishing solid ties with fellow designers enriched my experience during school but has also become a cornerstone for maintaining momentum and establishing a robust support system while launching my business.
I completed school in March 2023 and opened my business the same week. While I wish I embarked on this journey sooner, I’m grateful for where I am now. The pandemic provided a unique opportunity for self-reflection and growth for many and was integral in propelling me into a new career path.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Based in Denver, Colorado, I began my career as an elementary school educator, where I honed my functional space planning skills. After spending ten years in the classroom and having three children, I decided to pivot and follow my passion for Interior Design.
I received my Interior Design Certification from Heritage School of Interior Design and founded my namesake design firm, Mary Engelken Interiors in 2023. As a mom of three, I understand the how to combine beauty and function in my designs.
Mary Engelken Interiors aesthetic is inspired by my time spent living in Northern California . I incorporate my understanding of functionality with contemporary and organic elements to create cohesive and approachable spaces. Mary Engelken Interiors transforms houses into homes that effortlessly blend timeless elegance with modern functionality. Our spaces are obviously elevated without being over the top.
MEI is a full service design firm and offers furnishing and styling, renovation and new construction services. I pride myself on my client-centric design process. From the engagement phase to installation, we have multiple touch points and the client really is the center of the process, Every detail is thoughtfully curated to reflect your unique style and elevate your everyday living experience. My biggest goal when working with clients is to infuse joy and ease into every part of the design process!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I’m currently navigating is overcoming imposter syndrome. Having transitioned to a new career later in life, I found myself notably older than most of my classmates in design school. Embracing the concept that it’s entirely acceptable to embark on a fresh start has been an ongoing process. Societal expectations often dictate that we settle into a career path in our late teens or early twenties, only for many of us to discover our true professional calling later in life. Recognizing and challenging imposter syndrome has proven crucial in fully embracing my journey on this professional reinvention. It serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to pursue what aligns with your passion and purpose.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Without a doubt, the most impactful source of new clients for me has been word of mouth and referrals. I attribute this success to my ability to build strong relationships with clients and through delivering process-driven design services. Ensuring that my clients feel at ease throughout the entire process has been a cornerstone of my approach. This not only fosters trust but also contributes significantly to the positive recommendations that continue to drive my business forward.
