We were lucky to catch up with Mary-Craig McKnight recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mary-Craig, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
Starting in the hair industry has been one of the biggest blessing in my life. I definitely wish I would’ve started this career sooner. It has helped me grow in life so many ways. I’ve learned so many techniques and met great people along the way.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Mary-Craig McKnight. I’m the owner of MCM Salon here in North Raleigh. My love for hair started when I was a little girl and grew from there. When I started school at Paul Mitchell I knew this was the industry for me. I felt at home immediately.
This career has helped shaped me into the person I am today. I love expressing myself creatively and being a stylist allows me to do so. I feel great joy seeing how confident people feel in my chair. I also love serving others, I really felt like I was lead to do that with this industry.
My clients are a big part of what I do, I’m thankful I am trusted by them to show off my work. Without them, I would not be where I am today. This career can be challenging at times, but very rewarding at most.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a hairstylist is all the wonderful people I’ve met along the way. I’ve grown very close with my clients and even met one of my best friends through school.
The one on one interactions I get to have with people creates a very special relationship. Not only do I get to be someone’s stylist, but I also become someone’s friend. This allows me and my clients to build trust, leaving me more confident behind the chair. This industry has introduced me to things better than I could even imagine.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I would say word of mouth is the best source to build your company. I sadly am not the best with social media, but I think posting your work and reaching out to others helps. I’m still in process of building my clientele but connections and knowing people has been very helpful.
