We were lucky to catch up with Mary Claggett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mary, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I was greener than a green bean when I was installed in my 1st gallery. I suffered from “imposter syndrome” and I didn’t even sign my artwork. An incredibly talented and brilliant artist volunteered to mentor me. Changed the very trajectory of my life wanting nothing in return. He taught me how to make my own prints, how to digitally capture my work, how to set up a website, more than I can say.

Mary, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a mixed media artist, primarily utilizing acrylics. You could call me a contemporary abstractionist, but frankly, “I paint on things”. I never touched paint before 2018, but but I discovered fluid art during the pandemic as way to de-stress from the pharmaceutical research. I utilize acrylic on paper, canvas, metal, furniture, ceramics. I also love to both instruct and conduct “Sip and Paints” when time allows. I also volunteer at local schools providing art instruction.

Can you share one of your favorite marketing or sales stories?
I was informed of the opportunity to display my art on a 50 foot billboard for free. My mentor knew of the opportunity and had not applied. He said ” you have to be ready.” I did it anyway. Extremely wise decision.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I can’t stress mentorship enough. I am a science nerd, I don’t know anything about building a following. Go to things, meet people, check their followers, go to folks who have “done it” and ask “how to do it”. Humility is a powerful tool, and most people are “good”. They will answer your questions if you ask.
