We recently connected with Mary Cap and have shared our conversation below.
Mary, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
A woman I hadn’t seen in 25 years wrote me into the will for her Foundation and left me the money I used to be able to start my business the way I wanted to, invest in the crystal alchemy bowls and complete a certification with the Sacred Science of Sound. I don’t think my jaw could have hit the floor any faster than when I received that letter in the mail from a lawyer’s office telling me that I was written into the will for the Tatjana Grgich Foundation. I had been contemplating how I could possibly start a business of this nature in the way that felt right without having the funds to do so and this was truly a gift sent from an angel. My Mom worked for the Tatjana Grgich Foundation when I was a young girl, during the time my Father battled and later died from Cancer. I had not seen her since that time, when I was about 13. I can only assume that she had a big heart and felt pulled to do something for the girl who she watched slowly lose her Father. I honor Tatjana and her kindness & generosity at every sound bath I hold by having a Grgich Hills wooden wine box in my set-up which I place next to me reminding me that everything is divinely led and I can surrender to that.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I live in Carlsbad with my Husband and two sons, and becoming a Mother for the first time is what really sent me on the journey that led me to sound healing. I left a fast paced career doing wedding & event sales and planning for hotels to stay at home when my oldest was born, and the dramatic lifestyle change left me facing a loss of identity and battling depression for the first time in my life. Going through this dark time led me to discovering tools that could help me out of that place, help me heal from past traumas and move everyday stress through my body rather than letting it build up and pushing it away. Having always had a passion for music and having sung my whole life, I knew that I wanted to combine that passion along with the service aspect I loved from my previous career, and was divinely led to attend a sound healing, having never heard of it before. It was like BAM! – that’s it – that’s your soul’s purpose and work, and exactly the tool you need to get yourself out of this place. It has all been so divinely led, and I love how I get to serve others in this way.
I would say my sound baths are unique being that I sing with my bowls, writing original songs as well as doing some vocal toning with the crystal alchemy bowls and with the buffalo drum. Hearing people describe my voice and songs as angelic has been something I am proud of and in awe of, as I sang in rock bands for years and have never thought of my voice in that way! I particularly feel a passion for working with Mothers and helping them to release stuck emotions and learn about this powerful tool that can help them manage their stress and mental health as parents. My motto with my business is to “Radiate What You Seek” and I aim to do that and help others do that in my work.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Remaining balanced/grounded and not letting stress get built up within me. My work is all about energy and frequency and the ability it has to transfer and transmute, which is why sound healing is such a powerful modality. The energy a practitioner brings into a session is very important to how the session will go. If I’m not successful at managing my own stress and energy it can negatively impact the experience of my clients, and that doesn’t bode well for a successful sound healing business! I manage my stress through a variety of ways, but the ones most essential to me are movement (not only of my body but through my voice as well in either singing, yelling or even expressing my voice through journaling) and focusing on breathing and the present moment with sound healing, on a mindful walk or through a 5 senses check-in.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I have had to unlearn the mindset that “problems are bad” and realize that hard is not the same thing as bad, which is how it felt for a long time for me. I was kind of a control freak for much of my life until having a child, which glaringly puts into perspective that you are absolutely not in control! I think that having lost not only my Father but several other family members when I was young quickly had me feeling out of control and wanting to do what I could to maintain a semblance of order in my life. It took recognizing that I wasn’t showing up the way I wanted to for my child to really learn to let go and surrender to the present and to the magic that focusing on that can bring. The hard things and the issues that come up typically allow us a chance to either shine or show us the areas within ourselves that need work or attention. These moments and situations allow us a choice – to stay stuck, to stay in a mindset that keeps us living in the muck of the issue, or to choose to move forward, be creative to find solutions and to put our strength and determination to the test. The hard stuff of life is how we continue to grow and become better and better versions of ourselves, which is really the whole point of life. If we don’t keep growing, we stay stagnant, and a vibrant joyful life doesn’t happen in the stagnant.
