We were lucky to catch up with Mary Bruno recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mary, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
This whole journey began when I was 8 years old when I began to ask myself questions about why I saw my mother very rarely and only lived with my maternal grandmother, my brothers and uncles, my father lived with my grandmother, if I saw him every days, but to my mother there were very few times that if at Christmas, birthday, Mother’s Day, etc. In my school there were always creative activities and one of those was art where I began to paint pictures, clay and it occurred to me that every time I could see my mother I would give her something made by me to tell her how much I loved her and get her attention . I began to paint a lot every day I learned to have more skills in drawing I remember that they gave me many books on how to learn to draw hands, feet, faces and so I gradually developed that skill in my hands although many people told me that he was a Don. I think it was many years of practice and love of wanting to learn.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Mary Bruno and I am a Graphic Designer from Venezuela.
My world in art comes from the age of 8 when I wanted to convey my love through it to my mother because I didn’t live with her and it was a way of telling her look what I can do for you. Then in 2009 I started studying Graphic Design in 2011 I had my first job as a Graphic Designer then I had another job where I learned a lot about product photography until 2015 when I came to the United States in 2016 I started to see many art stores and I wanted to paint many pictures learn new techniques like oil painting which is one of my favorite techniques. Then in 2018 I signed up to participate in an art gallery in the city where I lived and it was called The national arts program in Osceola County, FL the experience was wonderful it was my dream to be able to show 2 paintings one was with the acrylic technique and the other technique it was oil January 2019 The second year in a row that I participated again and won second place prize with my colored pencil technique, that made me feel that I could bring my art to more people I remember that it was one of the happiest days of my life . In the middle of that same year I entered into depression and anxiety and I began to see a Chilean embroidery artist Ignacia Julián who said that embroidery made her come out of depression and that’s how it caught my attention but once I started embroidering I fell in love with that technique of drawing with thread, then I did an online course of another Chilean artist Valentina Castillo, pet embroiderer and I remembered my puppy with whom I lived 17 years of my life and I said why not learning to embroider pets is a beautiful way to illustrate our pets have a unique memory. Nowadays I make portraits of pets that their owners want to remember for the rest of their days, other people want to give a very special gift to people they love. I decided to dedicate myself to this full time 2020 participate in events making custom orders bringing happiness to homes I continue to learn every day about embroidery and various painting techniques I believe that no matter the age and the time when you decide to start doing what you like and to experience.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Many, many people told me that you couldn’t make a living from art, especially in my country that it wasn’t so valued, they always told me I was studying medicine or engineering and I never paid attention, inside I always said but if I study another career or do something else then I won’t be myself. It doesn’t matter how many times someone tells you that you can’t achieve that, just follow your instinct believe in yourself, believe in what you can do with what you like the most, maybe you can believe that what you are passionate about is a hobby but you don’t know if later someone loves what you do what you are passionate about. Do not stop dreaming remember that it is never too late to start.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
What drives me the most to bring my artistic world to people and fills my heart with love is seeing the reaction of their faces full of happiness when they see some personalized or elaborate art and they tell me many beautiful things that fill my heart with happiness I think That is what drives me every day to continue filling many homes with joy and color..
