We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mary Bohan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mary below.
Mary , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Since I was a child, I was never one to have a clear vision of what I wanted to be when “I grew up”. My parents gave me a solid, supportive foundation and the freedom to figure it out…no matter how crazy the idea appeared. My journey began with an undecided major in my first year of college, leading me down unexpected paths. I moved to Mexico at 19 years old where I studied Tourism and Spanish, only to transfer to the University of Arizona 3 years later where I ultimately earned a degree in Elementary Education. Upon graduation I got married and we moved to Puerto Rico where I taught English. My parents have instilled in me that life has no guarantees, and there is no time like the present to do what truly lights you up. I am so grateful.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The Grassroots Gallery and Massage has been a labor of love, born from a passion for creative exploration, community and healing. The space was originally founded in 2010 with my lifelong friend Kari Petsche as a space for local artists simply to showcase their work. The gallery quickly evolved into a hub of creativity and collaboration. From figure drawing classes, jewelry workshops, an experimental “art lab”, to live music, food and dance. we offered opportunities for people of all skill levels to explore and share their creative passions. We partnered with local youth organizations and charities in mural projects, and began a program for kids that came to Rochester through the refugee resettlement process to practice English through the arts. Later that year, a screen-printing shop was added to the mix, where we printed t-shirts for local companies, offered field trips for high school students, and held “print your own shirt” events where the community could experience the printing process.
In 2017, I expanded the business to include massage therapy and became a licensed massage therapist, certified cupping practitioner and reiki master. This addition allowed me to merge my interest in the healing arts with my dedication to serving the community. As I delved deeper into the world of massage therapy, I became particularly fascinated by its potential to address mental health issues. . I am currently developing a new massage modality called Neuro-somatic Integration Therapy, which aims to bridge the gap between treating mental and physical health, fostering collaboration between massage therapists and mental health professionals. Today, the Grassroots Gallery and Massage is more than just a place to explore creativity or receive a massage—it’s an invitation to let go of life’s stressors and return to a more peaceful balanced state.
I am proud of the diverse range of services we offer, from traditional massages to innovative therapies aimed at improving both mental and physical well-being. My commitment to community engagement remains as strong as ever, evidenced by our partnerships with local organizations and my shared office space with psychologists and a fellow massage therapist. I am currently researching graduate programs in neuroscience as I am excited to explore the intersection of massage therapy and mental health in even greater depth.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the most significant lessons I had to unlearn as a business owner was my innate tendency to be a “people-pleaser”, even at the expense of my own well-being and business sustainability. As a creative and a healer, my natural inclination was to prioritize the needs and desires of others, sometimes to the detriment of my own financial stability. The backstory to this lesson is rooted in my deep passion for serving others and creating a nurturing environment for artistic expression and healing. However, as I transitioned from a purely creative endeavor to a business owner, I realized that my people-pleasing tendencies were often at odds with sound business practices.
For instance, the first time I raised my prices, it brought about a whirlwind of anxiety and fear. I was terrified that clients would be upset with me or that I would lose their business. However, I soon came to understand that running a successful business required a mindset shift. I had to learn that setting fair prices for my services was not only necessary for the sustainability of my business but also a reflection of the value I provide.
Navigating the balance between being a creative, a healer, and a business owner has been a journey of self-discovery and growth. I’ve had to learn how to assert boundaries, communicate effectively with clients, and prioritize my needs without compromising the quality of care I provide. Ultimately, embracing a more business-minded approach has allowed me to better serve my clients, invest in the growth of my practice, and pursue my passion for healing with renewed confidence and clarity. It’s a continual process of unlearning old habits and embracing new perspectives, but one that has been essential for the success and sustainability of my business.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation within the market has been built on a foundation of dedication to professionalism and a deep passion for creating a sacred space for healing. From the moment clients step into my practice, I want them to feel supported, embraced and inspired. Central to my approach is the belief that massage therapy is not just about addressing physical ailments, but also about nurturing the mind and spirit. I specialize in treating symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, grief and chronic pain, recognizing the interconnectedness of mental and physical wellness. My goal is to provide clients with a sanctuary where they can put everything down, settle their nervous systems, and reconnect with their bodies.
Attention to detail is paramount in my practice. I incorporate numerous sensory enhancements to elevate the therapeutic experience. During sessions, I refrain from initiating small talk, allowing clients to fully immerse themselves in the relaxation process. Additionally, I take detailed notes on each client’s preferences, ensuring that their needs are consistently met without the need for constant repetition.
As a lifelong student, I am constantly seeking to expand my knowledge and stay informed on emerging research in massage therapy, anatomy, and pathology. My passion for learning not only enhances the effectiveness of my treatments but also ensures that I am equipped to address the evolving needs of my clients. Above all, I genuinely care about the well-being of my clients. I forge alliances with local psychologists, recognizing the importance of a holistic approach to healing. By collaborating with other healthcare professionals, I am able to provide comprehensive care that addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of wellness. My reputation is not just built on the quality of my treatments, but also on the genuine connection and care that I bring to each session. It’s this dedication to professionalism, attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to client well-being that sets me apart in the market and allows me to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those I serve.
