We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mary Amor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mary , thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I think that it is very natural for people to want to speed up the learning process to start seeing progress faster; however, I think that patience is most important when learning a craft. Finding something that I absolutely loved and could spend hours and hours at a time focusing on was key. I think the skills that are most essential to photography are passion, love for art and technology, and tenacity. The obstacles that stand in the way of learning more are impatience and getting disillusioned with the industry itself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have always been a keen observer of people and am particularly fascinated with family dynamics. I remember reading several birth order psychology books when I was a pre-teen.
I bring an artist’s eye and heart to people that want photographs that capture their family’s unique story. There are no two families that are alike. I feel like family photography should be customized and tailored to each family in an authentic way in order to not be cheesy. I think capturing the soul and spirit of a family is very important and keeps every session fresh and exciting.
I am a big advocate for having custom photographic family artwork for your walls because every day you get to be reminded of how amazing your family is. We all want to belong and having professional family portraits on your walls can really improve your children’s self esteem. I love seeing professional photographs on my wall because I am reminded everyday what I am working so hard for. I am super proud to be a part of my own family unit.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish that MasterClass existed when I was younger. What a great resource!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As a single mother to two boys, I am passionate about helping other single mothers feel seen along their motherhood journey. Just because we are solo parenting does not mean that our daily child-rearing work should go unnoticed. I feel called to celebrate and bear witness to the wonderful work single moms (and dads) are doing everyday. My hope is that they proudly hang their family artwork and are reminded everyday of how amazing and strong they are!
