We recently connected with Mary Alice Mina and have shared our conversation below.
Mary Alice, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Have you ever experienced a times when your entire field felt like it was taking a U-Turn?
In dermatology, we have seen a huge uptick in procedures, products, and promises to reverse the clock and ant-age! With that comes a huge amount of overwhelm and frankly, self doubt and insecurities over how we look, how we’re aging, and who we are. I’m on a mission to help simply skin care and skin health! Too often much of what we hear in the media and public involves buying things and the ‘experts’ giving skin advice are not actual skin care experts like dermatologist. This further leads to overwhelm and overspending. I love to bring skin care back to the basics: what you really need and what you can eliminate. I love to help my patients identify their skincare needs and pair that with their skin care goals to make sure they have practical and impactful skincare habits. I also love this push for proaging and projuvenation whereby we look to make proactive changes in our health to benefit our skin for decades to come. I also would love to see more of an embrace of aging instead of trying to stamp it out and pretend like it’s not actually happening. Unfortunately this leads to an ageless look that is neither youthful nor aesthetically pleasing.
Mary Alice, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Harvard trained dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon. I love making an impactful change in my patients lives whether I am treating a skin cancer or helping rejuvenate the skin! I find that most of my patients and audience today feel insecure about their appearance and this is compounded by the overwhelm of skin care info, products, and promises out there. It leads to mistrust and uncertainty about who to trust and what advice to follow. I love talking about holistic and integrative skin care and skin habits, without gimmicks and hype. That’s what led me to create THE SKIN REAL, a podcast geared toward providing real skin care know how to the public. No more 10 step skin care routines or expensive treatment plans, THE SKIN REAL leads listeners on a journey through skin care from preventative measures, medical dermatology to aesthetics. I’m on a mission to make skin care simple!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Providing ethical and consistently excellent results will help build your brand and reputation. Say no to endorsements or sponsorships that don’t align with your values and always provide exceptional customer care!
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I love this question and as a small business owner with incredibly high staff retention, treating your staff like the real humans that they are is key. Mutual respect and compassion is required! We love to help our staff continue to learn and grow, challenging them with new opportunities within the office and encouraging their education and advancement outside the office.
