We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marvin Joles. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marvin below.
Alright, Marvin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I am extremely happy when I get to create. Being able to create income from it has been a tremendous blessing. It allows me to be free to share what I am interested in, create content around that and share it with the world. I recently went to the World of Asphalt Conference in St Louis and spoke there. While there I was able to create video content with some of the largest brands in our industry… all while in the stadium where the Rams won the Super Bowl. It was a surreal moment for me. It made me think about how lucky I am to be able to do this, and have done it, for a long time now and that if I had to go into a “regular” job, how awful of a fit I would be there.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an Asphalt Contractor to start. In order to drive potential clients to contact us regarding their asphalt needs, I started posting content on social media around a decade ago. A strange thing happened though. Other contractors and people within the Asphalt Community started commenting on, and sharing, my content. It wasn’t long before I was the most recognizable person within the Asphalt Industry on social media. Also, my actual asphalt business started to boom. Within a short time I was covered in Articles in Magazines, then asked to write articles for magazines, then speak at events Nationally. I started podcasting about 5 years ago and that has been an amazing experience, as the conversations we have had have been life changing for some listeners. We are also to bring news, information and updates about what products and services are available to contractors in the asphalt space, which may make their processes and life easier. Im proud of being able to become a creator, and adapt to that career from a career of labor and being in the field.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I really want to help create and foster opportunities within the asphalt industry for the next generation, while showing just how interesting and diverse the roles in our industry are.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I really think the growth of my social media following happened because I make content directed towards the contractors and workers within the Asphalt Industry, and that’s who I am, so it makes it easy to create great content for them because I make what I would want to see.
