Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marvin Joles. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marvin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you’re open to it, can you talk to us about the best (or worst) investment you’ve made. What’s the backstory and the relevant context behind why you made the investment
Investing in myself was probably the best decision I have ever made. Once I found my niche, I consumed as much insight and knowledge as I could by finding mentors and attending conferences in my industry. I was inexperienced in the higher levels of business building and understanding how marketing is the energy your business consumes to make everything run. Once I found mentors and mastermind groups in those areas, my views and actions changed to reflect the end result that had finally become my envisioned goal.
Marvin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Once my Asphalt business got legs under it I was able to devote time and resources to my podcast, Blacktop Banter. With my successful ventures at Social Media Marketing for WisCoat, I mimicked that process with Blacktop Banter and soon garnered many followers and really helped connect our community to others within the Asphalt Industry. Now we provide sponsorships and advertising outlets to Brands that wish to connect with the Asphalt Community at large. We also provide the Blacktop Banter Success Group, which is a group of like-minded contractors in this space, who want to see each other succeed. Our podcast has had guest from the NFL, NASCAR, X-Games and More, and these people are now resources for our BBSG Members. I am most proud of the fact that we have remained genuine and honestly just want what is best for our industry and the future people that will make it up.
Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?
Blacktop Banter is a “First of its kind” business in the Asphalt Industry. That being said, much of it has come into existence under my own hands and with my own vision. Within the last year, we took on some employees, with the hope we would land larger sponsorship and and partnerships. We did, but it was just in the nick of time as we were close to not being able to make it work within a month or so of being empty on funds. Now we are healthy with a great foundations and employees that LOVE to be here and do what we do for the community we love.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
We simply just posted honest videos that entertain and educate, in a space where not much content really existed before that. Those people who liked that content, and some who didn’t, would follow along to see where and when, we would be next. We toured many conferences and expos, making networking connections along the way. The best advice I can give to anybody hoping to build something similar is to be genuine and be a giver.
