Today we’d like to introduce you to Marvin Bonheur.
Marvin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I from the hood in the north est suburbs of Paris France. I growed up with differents communauty I had the chance to grow up in diversity with several ethnic groups but the reputation of our neighborhoods is very bad and stigmatized so I started taking photos to give another image of people from the hood
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it was full of obstacles, first at school where they explained to me that art was not made for people like me. Then the difficulty of finding a school that would accept me and the impossibility of paying for registration. When I arrived in the art world in Paris, I was very upset at the beginning because I didn’t have the codes of the Paris hype community.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have always been sensitive to art and social issues. I have always wanted to provide support to people who are victims of injustice. I think that through photography I found a way to defend oppressed people. My work is recognized because I was one of the first to represent people from the working-class neighborhoods of Paris in 2014. The intention was to show a reality through my eyes and my personal experience which was appreciated. I am proud to be the model that I would have liked to have had in my adolescence and I follow no rules which make my art more independent and singular
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I draw inspiration in my life from the artists of my generation, my family, my friends. I don’t often visit art galleries nor often buy books either I like to be inspired by ordinary things.
