At the age of thirty-eight, I was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy, a life-threatening heart disease. At about the same time, I was also diagnosed with depression, anxiety, Insomnia, migraine headaches, H pylori, Gastric Reflux, and crippling arthritis. My cardiologist told me that without a heart transplant, death was a real possibility.
After consulting with another specialist, a procedure was done to correct the irregular heart rhythm that was found. During my follow-up visit, he instructed me to change my lifestyle to a healthy one. To eat healthier, exercise for thirty minutes every day, reduce my stress levels, pray, meditate, and do yoga. He also instructed me to eliminate coffee from my diet, spend time in nature, get lots of fresh air and sunlight, and take care of myself.
In my desperation to live, I followed the doctor’s orders. My two children and my husband were my reasons to live.
That was thirty-four years ago. Today, I enjoy a healthy life in body mind, and spirit, free of all diseases and disorders.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The tough lesson I had to learn was that without my Health, I was nothing. At that time, I was happily married with two beautiful, well-behaved, healthy children. I was also at the peak of my career as a Registered Nurse, making lots of money. We owned a lovely house in a very nice area. Yet, all of these were meaningless at that time. I learned that true wealth is my health. I learned that health is not just the absence of diseases, but that health includes peace of mind, joy, and contentment. Hence, true health is holistic, involving the whole being: body, mind, and spirit.
