Marv , appreciate you joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
Photographer Timothy Paule hired me to shoot for XXL.com online for Kiate Moy for his access for artist platform I styled 3 looks they may have used 2 online . In 2012 I had never been asked what’s your fee prior to I can’t remember but I was paid and had to invoice .
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Marvin Neal I’m a Fashion Stylist & Creative Director I embarked on a styling career like most folks starting in retail my first retail job was at the GAP clothing store in Eastland Mall . From retail I moved on to being a Lifeguard but what happened was being that we were in trunks and bathing suits majority of the time when the weekend arrived my friends needed looks and I was the go to guy to run to the mall with em so I could never leave fashion behind. After a couple of years my cousin started rapping and My closet became the go to spot . I’m just good in the clutch I know how to make it happen in the last min and the look always turns out fire . I’m very proud of my career I didn’t think I could do fashion at this level here in Detroit so every magazine and artist I’ve worked with is a blessing .
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal is to become Creative Director of a major fashion house . It has always been a dream think Tom Ford to Gucci I’ve always lent my name to bigger brands or the connections so now I’m working to make it all make sense .
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Thinking that someone will save you . This is your life you have to live it how you need and make things fit for you . No one is going to save you . Do work and have a ball take care of your self .
